When you generate a route with the DTO Journey Planner it reports CO2 AVOIDED. For example, for my 8.5 mile cycle it says:
    New Feature
    CO2 AVOIDED

By choosing to walk or cycle instead of driving you are helping the environment.

Below is a guideline to the CO2 emissions you would have created had you chosen to drive:
    Average SUV: 3.419kg
    Average 2.0 litre diesel: 2.028kg
    Average 1000cc car: 1.71kg
    Electric/petrol hybrid car: 1.378kg

Really interesting to see that the much applauded hybrid carrs dont do a HUGE amount of difference.

    Outlaw SUVs, IMO.

A 60% reduction between SUV and hybrid is quite a lot. It's a 33% reduction between 2 litre diesel and hybrid - not bad.
Of course, these figures are influenced on how you drive - hard or gentle acceleration.

Does the manufacture of two engines not greatly reduce the carbon saving effect of a hybrid car over its lifetime?

They are marginally better than best of breed diesel , diesels last longer so over time less cars manufactured and they are cheaper so obviously less resources used. and diesels will run on biodiesel

peugeot will be bringing out a diesel hybird in a few years - 82 mpg !

how much C02 do humans spew out ? :D
