I hate the way with Sky in order to recieve Sports channels we have to pay for all the other junk on top of it.

As Setanta are showing one live premiership game every two weeks and are showing live PGA tour from '07 i reckon we should all defect from Sky!

    Anyone else agree?

Dont agree because they don't show half the stuff that SKY shows. Also where would I watch football league?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

    or cricket?

I agree with you on the point you cannot pay just for Sky Sports. No entertainment bundles, no movies, just the sports, thanks.

Well in order to receive Setanta (on satellite at least) you have to have a Sky subscription, so you still gotta pay for a lot of other junk anyway....

I wish you could buy a Setanta card, one that would only decode Setanta programs, and it could be used in any receiver.... Oh well, I suppose I should keep dreaming.

I presumed that once i had my old sky dish and card that i could get Setanta without having a Sky copntract? Are you sure you have to?

Setanta are selling NASN so it is unclear whether their coverage of U.S. football, baseball, basketball, hockey etc will continue for much longer.

heineken cup rugby? soccer internationals? i'd take sky over setanta any day, i have both, but only have setanta for nasn, to watch the ice hockey

    Get an ART card guys

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 404 ✭✭colmranger

Does the ART card work on old sky digibox?

I bet you have to fork out for a new box as well?

Please email me link it would pay for itself in the long run, just to mention when in the UK last year on a pub crawl every singly bar had the ART channels, it's amazing Sky haven't put a stop to this.

Unfortunatley you have to have a Sky contract to get Setanta on satellite.

AFAIK you can subscribe to setanta using an ex subscription card or a FTV card

I recall when Setanta won rights to soccer the media were saying how great this was as it was stopping Sky from having a monopoly and it was giving the public some choice.

How can that be so if you have to pay Sky before you can pay for Setanta?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 529 ✭✭✭Pat Gleeson

I don't like the idea of not having a seperate Sky Sports sub option, but Setanta charge too much for - in my opinion - a substandard product.

They have improved on the quantity, but the very least a paying subscriber should expect widescreen as standard where available.

At least Sky provide (at a cost) widescreen, interactivity and HD.

Nothing amazing about it Sky are a broadcaster not a regulator they can only take a case against a pub if they are using say a Sky residential card in a public area. The premier league can take action but they have already lost several cases against pub's who have paid for ART subscriptions.

Did my eyes deceive me when I saw them advertising the Football League coverage starting. Hopefully it wont be Sunderland TV and give plenty of clubs coverage except that blue lot down the road from us.

I know this has probably been asked before but just for clarification. I cant used my uk ftv card to subscribe to the irish setanta? I presume they would pick up on that straight away . dont wanna use my cancelled irish card as it wont have c4 5 etc.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

Setanta will ask you for your viewing card number and they will know whether it is a UK card or not. They will know the address it is registered too. You cannot use a cancelled card!

Rang Setanta yesterday to subscribe. My setup: Panasonic Digibox on dish pointed to 28°e. Scotish lady wouldn't have a clue, said I needed Sky subscibtion card, I said, all I have is an ex-sub card (that was in the box). No good, she replied. Then no money, I answered and hung up.
Is it really true that in order too watch Setanta you have to subscribe to one of their competitors?
Would it be feasible to subscribe on a northern FTV card?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,321 ✭✭✭Foggy43

I do not know if you can subscribe to Setanta on a FTV card. Here in the UK you can subscribe to Setanta on 'Freeview' the digital terrestrial service, but all you can get is the Scottish Premiership.

Being a NI FTV card you probably will not get Premiership live games for the rest of this season anyway. Depends on your interests! I don't think anyone knows what lies in store for us in 2007-08.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Smeagol

No, it's mainly for NHL/NASN, and SPL. English premier league I get fta, so no shortage there.
And btw. scottish lady mentioned that your box needs to be hooked up to the phone line for activating the card. Can't that be done "through the air"?

Yes. I suspect the phone line is only to phone home and say it *HAS* been activated. The Sky box appears so only phone home on foot of a satellite command or someone using interactive (i.e. buying Sky Box office thingy).

You do not need an active sky subscription to subscribe to setanta. scotish lady was probably confused. Try calling again and just give your sky card number, don't mention it been an ex sub card. You should have no problems.

Lots of people in UK subscribing to setanta on FTV cards. Not sure what the situation would be if you tried subscribing on a UK FTV card with irish billing address. Interesed to know if anybody has tried and succeded.

I'd imagine you'd need an ex-Irish sub at least. With a UK card, you'll get the UK version of Setanta which would exclude Setanta Sports Ireland and the 3pm soccer games.

Jeepers! She's only doing her job. I hope the real call wasn't as rude as it reads.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 301 ✭✭Smeagol

    She's only doing her job.
    But not a good one.
and don't worry, I let her know in a very polite manner.;)
Anyways, on the subscribtion site they want to know my phone no. + the number the Digibox is connected to. Will they ever check?
My irish ex-sub card gave me Sky three, now its gone. does that mean, the card is now completely switched off? And before you ask, it has been in the box for the last forthnight or so.

No an art card does not unfortuantly work on an old skybox.

You do indeed have to fork out for a new box and move your dish to a different satellite.

As far as sky stopping pubs in the UK, there is an ongoing battle about it. No-one (including Sky) is authorised to broadcast live football matches in the UK during the period of 2.45pm to 5.25pm on a Saturday. It doesn't apply here afaik.

Sky can't stop them as long as they have paid a sub. Sky have lost last few case and arn't taking more.
Particulary here, Sky is as much a foreign broadcaster as Art.

Seems bit strange the way virtually all UK pubs/bars have Art yet here in Ireland i have seen hardly any Art systems?

    Are we just too thick:confused:

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Maybe so, but there is one distinction. We do have what the UK doesn't. Live 3pm Saturday kick-offs, and we don't have to pay any more than a licence fee to see 15 of them (for the rest of this year) and if the home/pub has basic cable... not much extra per month.

Have the overseas Premiership rights been negotiated for next season yet?

Just to confirm. Got setanta on an irish ex-sub card, online, Sky three still not working (no loss, really). And didn't hook up the phone line to the box.

Most of the pubs throughout Waterford City have Art installed instead of purchasing the PremPlus season ticket.

Yes, and it looks like Art have lost the rights, Showtime have aquired the rights instead of them.

    Byte!
I take it 'for now' as in this season?

EDIT: Just did a 'search' and this discussion came up on or around November 14. Looks like it is ART's last season for 3 at least.
