Metallica - Ireland - 2007

Ok, first of all, this is something Ive wanted to trash out for a long time. Ive been a fan of Metallica for a very long time and the band played here in 86, three times in 88 plus a Northern Ireland date, 91 plus a Northern Ireland date, 96 and 99. They have, of course, also played here in 2003, 2004, 2006 and now (it seems by Lars Ulrich's comments at the end of Metallica's last show in Ireland) they are set to play here again.

Leaving aside the promoter, because my argument is not with them, I have to ask if people actually want to see Metallica play here again a 4th time in 5 years. Such a thing has never really happened in Ireland, with a band of Metallica's magnatude, having gladly paid 185Euro personally to see them 3 times in the past four years I have to say that enough is enough and it really drains the magic from their performance to come again.

Ive talked with a lot of people who feel the same way and I want to know what your opinion is and whether (if such a gig should be announced) you will be coming along?

My argument is that a more varied range of performers could be booked, as opposed to Metallica (like Iron Maiden/Marilyn Manson in 2005) for Metal fans to enjoy a days Rockin in da Summer Sun

Didnt he say they'd be back next year with a new album aswell though? From what Iv heard, I doubt the new album will be out early enough for them to play in the summer sun. And if the tour mainly consists of stuff Iv heard from the new album, i'll gladly keep my €70 from them. But if its in the Point or something, it'd be tempting. I didnt see them 2004 either so might squeeze another day out of them for me though

I'll be there with bells on...if I could have them play in my front room everyday I'd never tire of it...

At least when they come over they seem to make a kind of mini festival atmosphere(sp?)...and tbh at least they take the time to come over, otherwise this would be a thread about why they never come over, like the ones we have for NIN and System of a down ignoring here on every tour etc.

Id go again, in fact hopefully it becomes an annual thing(Long shot).

At least metal fans are getting to see a great metal band live here who DO put on a good show.
Who could say that they werent happy to hear all of puppets live last year?

I seen em the first two years they came but refused to go up last year even though i wanted to see alice in chains and stone sour, I would go next year though if the new album was good(unlikely) or they had a good support act.

Why did you deny yourself to see two bands you want to see just because of who the headliners are?

jaysus i wouldn't go and see them in the point that's for sure. i like to hear my bands when i go to gigs.

i do hope they return as i'd like to see metallica play a house show somewhere.

I've missed them the last few times they played, couldn't be bothered with them at this stage. I've lost a lot of respect for them as people and as a band after the Napster thing and the St Anger thing (the thing being it's cock)!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 979 ✭✭✭Keedowah

I'd go see them if they played every year... but if they played in the Point i'd have second thoughts - it has to be the worst venue in Europe! The SFX is better ffs!

I didn't go last time, and I won't be going again. Not unless there is one serious line up.

Hopefully they'll play the RDS again next summer. Yeah the Point isn't a great venue, the sound is never loud enough and its very hard to get a great view when you're standing. I wouldn't mind seeing them again cos they'll be playing new material.

I went last year for AIC and Korn more so that Metallica as like most people they pissed me off with the Napster/Metallica Inq crap.

I have to say I was well impressed on the day mainly cos of Master of Puppets which made up for the loss of Korn.

I dont think I would be running back next year unless as Pornapster says It is one serious line up.

Anyhow I think we should convince Rammstein to play the RDS, as its outdoor they might be a bit more relaxed on the pyrotechnic rules.

I've said it before, and dag nabbit, I'll say it again : of course I'll go, it's metallica!

three times in 88 plus a Northern Ireland date

Ehhh, I recall two dates in the Top Hat plus one NI date... I don't think there was a third date here, I would have been at it ;)

Well i've only seen them once so far and that was last summer. They put on a great performance, and i'll gladly go and see them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,743 ✭✭✭Rockee

Ive seen them in 99(still my fave gig ever) at the point and 2003 at the RDS. I didnt go last year cos I could sense the piss being taken out of our well worn pockets. Id go next year if the next album is quality or Lars decides to go back and actually care about playing drums again.

For the last few years I've gone to the Download festival in Donington Park and that usually leaves me fairly broke so unless there is a special gig on I definitely wouldn't be bothered. Especially since getting from Galway to Dublin and back again can often be more hassle than getting from Galway to Donington :D

I saw Metallica in 2003, 2004 and last summer so as others have said, unless there was a new album or something I would pass. Mind you, if they were to start playing the entire tracklist from Ride the Lightning like they did with Master of Puppets I'd definitely check it out!

because i couldnt justify paying that much for two shortened set lists, still though you do have a point.

Yeah seen metallica twice, 2003 and 2004. So something different would be welcome during the summer months, when was the last time Megadeth played here?

I saw them when they played in 2004, missed them last year but i'd definitly go to seem them if they played here again, especially if they're playing any old stuff. They're a good live band and there's a good atmosphere at their gig's. Me likey.

    2005.

After seeing this years' show, I'm more revved up than usual for the next one. But I'd like to see them play The Point, or at least somewhere other than the RDS. Like my back garden. :p

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,894 ✭✭✭✭phantom_lord

If metallica played 2 days in a row I'd go to them all. Same as if they played every year I'd go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,618 ✭✭✭Civilian_Target

The last occasion proved well worthwhile - I'd be tempted to go again but wouldn't shed another €70 without close examination and reviews of recent gigs.

Saw them in '03 and '04, enough to make me not want to see them again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,374 ✭✭✭✭nacho libre

I was reluctant to go last year but i'm very glad i did. However, i won't be going this year as they played the perfect setlist last year.
To finish with seek and destroy last year made me a very happy man:D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 953 ✭✭✭superconor

Well I havent seen them, so I probably would go, if the support was good. If they did an Early Days tour I would go without thinking. I'd probably go abroad to see that.

    I hate Seek And Destroy....

I third that :D Ok ok ok enough! :) Well, heres hoping their next album is worthwhile. I noticed theyre releasing all of their videos on DVD in a few weeks. It says 'Mama Said' was never shown in North America or indeed probably anywhere else in the world...I remember it being on Top Of The Pops a few times. Goin back on thread...Id love to see them maybe indoors at the RDS.

not as bad as the point though

I wouldn't go again unless there was a great line-up.

I thought the waiting this year was painful. In 2004 when we got our pit passes we were able to leave the arena and go back nearer the city centre for breakfast. We headed back to the RDS at our leisure when it was closer to the show. This year we had to stay put, it got really uncomfortable.
Plus, I don't know if I could muster up the same excitement for the band seeing them for the 4th time. A good few songs have been played at each gig.

I agree, Seek and Destroy is annoying. It just sounds very slow and boring compared to the rest of the album.

I've seen them 6 times now & I'd go again. It's always a good day out....

If only we could get them to play 'Dyers Eve' instead of 'Whiskey in the jar' though... ;):p

i hope next time they play whiskey first then all the red necks who spend every break in the concert shouting "whiskey whiskey!!" will shut the hell up, although they'll probably start into the cringworthy "ole olé olé.....!"business instead

If I could be gaurenteed of that, Id go see them again, hands down. Id also like to hear the Unforgiven 2, even though its such a useless song - in the fact its just a follow up to a previous classic, and thats something i never taught id see metallica do, rip off themselves - id still like to see it

It's simple really: don't pay any more money. Just don't go. I know lots of people who've seen them enough and don't wanna go again. I also know they will still lots of tickets.

I seen them for the first time last last year and I'll gladly see them again. It makes sense for them to tour again. If they release an album, they'll do a world tour tour. They're not gonna tour everywhere and not come to Ireland. That'd be stupid. Of course if they don't release an album, they won't tour. Simple and fairly logical really.

Last year was an exception as there was no album, but boy it was worth it!

Yeah, the 'buzz' and 'excitment' and what not does decrease signifigantly every year.
It is annoying but I have to admit, I have been entertained each time.

Seen them the last 3 times, do not want to see them again. Plus i hate the RDS.

I've seen them a good few times, and I'd happily go see them again. While I do hate the point, it's always great to see "one" played indoors.

The animosity some people have towards them never made much sense, yes St. Anger sucked, but megadeth and maiden have had many completly crap albums then metallica (Load is a good album .. unload not so much). And quite frankly I agreed with Lars when he went after napster.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,649 ✭✭✭Catari Jaguar

I'd def go see em again. 2003 didnt get anywhere near front, 2004 got to barrier, 2006 I got into pit. Maybe in 2007 I'l end up backstage the rate it's goin. I think they're excellent live. Hey, as long as i can download their music for free I'l fork out for tkts. :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,649 ✭✭✭Catari Jaguar

It's reload. not unload... or do u mean that greatest hits money spinner? Load is a suckfest country western sell out:mad: imo... St Anger. I hate. luckily played none of it last show

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,350 ✭✭✭Het-Field

Seen them in 1999, 2003, 2004, 2006 and if they play again in 2007 Ill be there. Look at bands like System of A Down and Nine Inch Nails. They are bands that most would wet themselves to see, yet they never play Ireland. Metallica respect their Irish fans

Ehhhh, all of those bands have played Ireland.

To be fair, it's not up to a band to spin a globe and stick a pin wherever they feel like playing: "We wanna play Rand McNally!". It's down to their regional record company (who usually pay for the tour and choose what market they want the band to play), booking agents and local promoters. It's business, nothing more. If all those people don't think they'll make money by shipping a band, touring personnel and gear over to this island for one or two shows and then shipping it all somewhere else, they simply won't won't invest the money into making it happen. Sometimes they do think they will make money but for so many reasons (agreeing terms, dates, fees, cut of the merch, etc etc etc), it still doesn't happen. It's seldom a band will dictate where they play, more frequently they're handed a list of the next two months of their itinerary which tells them where their band will be on a particular date.

I'd imagine that metallica would have alot more control over these things than other bands though...

True enough, but there wasa noticeable difference in the crowds between 2004's gig, and 2005's gig.
Eventually they will regret doing this.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,430 ✭✭✭Sizzler

I have to say I'd love to see them go back to an indoor gig, the point is a little small but can create an atmosphere. I remember seeing them agus Megadeth back in the early 90's and they were savage gigs.A few nights in the point wouldnt kill them :D Thing is at this stage of their careers their schedule is rammed and the money men have a huge say and what they do
