Moving from IT Development into Operations?

I've been in development for 8 years and really want to get away from programming, the appeal just isn't there any longer. I would like to stay within IT and an area that interests me would be Operations. There is currently a position available in a company where my friend works and he got talking to their head of operations. Got told that the main criteria would be good communication and that the person would need to be very approachable. When he asked would a person from a programming background be considered, he was told that a person from a programming would also be technical and potentially suitable but that they were generally poor people persons.

I don't have much experience in this sort of role, configuring routers, tomcat & apache servers and MySql db's would be about as far as my knowledge would go. I'll probably pass on a CV anyway. What I'd like to know is, do people think that it's possible to make a switch of careers like this or is the challenge (from a knowledge pov) too high? And would my CV be even looked at for a position in operations?

Development and operations share a lot of things (depending on the company of course) and it should be iminently possible to make a swap.

In fact, we're recruiting operations positions at the moment ;)

that would scare me off the company right away. What a broad and generic statement that is basically untrue!

True, but that was just his opinion and not the company's. Although if you seen where I work then that statement is very apt!

Just following on from my earlier post above. I have started to look into getting a job in the area above and already sent out an application but my CV is all software focused so I'm not sure what sort of a response if any I will get back. Perhaps getting some certs in relevant areas might help.

What would be a good generally accepted cert to have for working in Operations? Would the CCNA be a good one to start with?
