De-noise-ing

I went to the GAA game tonight/last night to take pictures for the school paper, but got one image that I actually like. Except for the noise (I had to take pictures at ISO1600). Is there a process in photoshop to get rid of SOME of the noise? The picture is here or full image.

I know things like noise ninja exist, but I don't want to pay for another tool if it could be done with tools I already have.

    Thanks for the help!

Photoshop noise removal is rubbish, your picture looks grand what lens were you using? I have used noise ninja and its excellent.

That lens was the Canon 75-300 that came with my film rebel circa 1998 (though the body is a digi rebel XT, so i get a small zoom bonus from that). Not the sharpest, fastest, or best AF, but it can sometimes get the job done. I'm afraid it is about to be replaced by a Tamron 28-300, though, assuming the Tamron is sharp enough.

I use neat image and it does the job nicely.

Superzooms tend not to be too sharp especially at the 200-300, if you did a lot of night work a 50mm f1.8 or a 85mm f1.8 would suit better.

Are you looking to print this shot? If so how large? Unless you plan on enlarging it (larger than say 5*7) most of that noise would be hard to see in the print.

You can get a free version of neat image, but it restricts you to low res jpgs, usefull for web, but that's about it.

i just ran it through neat image - it cleans it up a bit ok, guess a bit of unsharp might sort of do some good too
if you need the cleaned up pic let me know and i'll send it on to you!

you can always go for selective layer blurring and then erasing the details with too much blur:
    1. make a layer copy
    2. do the blur on that copy (gaussian or other)
    3. erase with eraser parts of the image you don't wanna blurred.

People are also suggesting similar method with Add Noise filter but I haven't tried it yet.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't decided if/how large I would want it printed. I could see getting something around 8.5"x11" (near A4?) done.

I'll give neatimage a shot. I'd love to see the results from Fionn, if it is easy enough to send. Is the low-res restriction on actual file size, or dpi? I'm wondering if i could kinda fool the program.

Also, I wish I had a prime that would work for such things (the guy next to me was sitting on the box of his 400mm F/2.8 prime), but my 50mm wouldn't come CLOSE to making the people large enough. Thanks again for the input.

    heya
here it is, still some noise there but to filter any further would result in loss of detail

    Fionn,

not bad at all :-) Care to post a recipy? :-)

I'd actually crop it severity to bring out the central group, and just fill the backround with some gray noise gradients, as that building doesn't really add anything to the picture, that orange light has to go too. Take a look at it in th e evening.

It looks fine to me...(original image)

Like I doubt many people will know what "noise" is when it comes to looking at it in the paper!

Oh - for the paper it is fine. The noise from newsprint is FAR worse than anything in my camera any day of the week. I'm thinking of really printing it for myself. I was thinking of a tall crop to get the 2 main guys + the ball and a bit of ground. I might have to clone out a leg if I do that. Hopefully I'll have time to play a little more next weekend. Thanks for the preview of what neatimage can do.

I would crop it a lot more aggressively as you yourself said. I'd also blur the hell out of the background and lose the two wall mounted lights, the one in the leftmost part of the pic is extremely distracting (for me anyway). I'd also lose the two lads coming into frame from the right too.
Has the 75-300 got a max aperture of 5.6 at the long end? If it does this is one of those unfortunate situations where throwing a lot of money at a problem will solve it. Next time just give the lad with the 2.8 a bang and nick his lens.

okay, quick crop + blur (no USM... too much effor to flatten, etc). This is basically how I want it-- http://sweeneyb.com/gallery/GAA/IMG_3598_crop?full=1. I'd do a bit better job around the feet if I didn't have class at 9am. The 75-300 does have a min of f/5.6 on the far end. Unfortunately, the guy next to me was using his 2 best lenses on his 2 bodies (but wasn't much older than I was... wonder how he got the job).
