    Well i finally got my first bike this weekend and im thrilled, except the battery was nearly flat so i didnt get too many chances to let it cut out on me:rolleyes:

    Instead of getting upset with the dealer that i bought the bike off, i leaped into action and bought a battery charger (i would need one anyway from what i hear) but how long does a battery take to recharge fully (stupid question i know- but hand on my heart i have no idea)
    Its been charging now for 24 hours and still recharging which is fine but usually how long does a 12v battery take ?? The only reason i ask is because i am wondering if the battery is knackered completely and recharging it is a waste of time.

    Secondly, getting the battery out was awkward with some well hidden bolts and got me thinking about getting some kind of bike lift/hoist/table.
    For what i need to use a lift for, it probably isnt worth getting (is it?)
    Does anyone have or need a lift or is it worth it.

    Sorry i know im jumping the gun, as i havent even put the bike in second gear yet but im just too excited about the whole bike thing!!!!

    I have seen those hydrolic lifts with the bike supported on 2 forks for about 150-200 quid but is the bike stable on those lifts.

    Sorry to sound like a kid in a candy store but ive been looking forward to getting a bike and getting into biking including all the maintainance that goes with it for a while now and to be honest a flat battery and recharging it is a huge novelty right now. So i might as well enjoy it now cos in a few years time i could be stuck in the middle of nowhere on a wet dark night with a dead battery which i dont think i will enjoy as much.

    I have a paddock stand and it does the job - cost abt €50. I'm not sure about the charger I don't have one myself- the battery will charge when you drive the bike around thou so 24 hours sounds like more than enough. If it craps out and you don't have the charger with you you can always push start it?

    24 hours sounds like a long time alright. Might it be just the charger is not able to tell current battery levels? Have you tried placing it back into the bike to see if it will start?

    As TK suggested, you can always try a running start if the battery goes flat. To do this, follow the below:

    Turn key to on,
    Place cut off switch to allow power,
    Bring bike to a quite area with little or no traffic,
    Place bike in first gear,
    Hold in the clutch while standing beside the bike,
    Run with the bike... try get a good speed going,
    "pop" the clutch (means to let it out in a quick release)
    Bike should start to spluter,
    Just as the engine starts to kick in, pull in the clutch again.

    Bike should now be running (although you may need to give the engine a few little revs to get her running). If all is ok, the battery should begin to charge. Try ride the bike to get it to charge faster. Be careful of cut outs at this point. Turn off any lights if the bike does cut off. Then try electric start the bike again.

    Where did you buy the bike from though? What kind of bike? We might be able to give you more advice. Remember, you paid good money for your new pride and joy. So if something doesn't work as soon as you got it from the shop, get them to take it back and sort it. You are entitled to this.

    Once you have the bike sorted, remember to take lessons. Also ask as many questions here as you like... someone is bound to know something that might help you :)

    It could be the case that the shop didn't prep the bike for long enough? Usually they'd have it running to give the battery a charge. The battery crapped out like this on my last bike on the first day but the new bike was grand - he had it running in the shop for me while we sorted the paperwork etc and I got home without a prob. Ah the memories - there was no traffic so I felt like I was in American Chopper when you see them out giving the bike a test run except that intead of Orange County I was cruising by Glasnevin Cemetery!! :D:D

    Charge the battery at 10% of it's rated capacity - any faster, and you risk boiling it and ruining it - I hope you're not using a car charger - they'll wreck the battery as they charge too fast.

    So, a 15Ah battery, charge it at 1.5A for 10 hrs, or .75A for 20 - get the idea?

    I've a lift table - and it's a godsend. I should have bought one 10 yrs earlier. But you'll need a proper garage for it, and they ain't cheap ! See it here: ML5H-001.jpg

    Sorry i started two identical threads, i didnt realise....

    That table lift looks ideal but might be out of my league for now, but if i come across a cheap one i might consider one.
    Well i charged the battery and it seems to be fine, lights ignition indicators working, but she aint starting. The engine churns for a few second but doesnt fire. It sounds rough as if there is a bearing flying around in the engine. She is under warranty so i will give the dealers a call this morning and sort it.

    Hopefully back on the road by the weekend.

    Well the bike is running again no thanks to me. I realised i was giving up a bit too early thinking it could be a major problem so i went back to basics. Checked everything and called into the bike shop and got new spark plugs as i was told i may have flooded it and better be safe than sorry. Threw one in and she started.... excellent. Took a quick spin around the yard and she was flying it... oh happy day!! Thanks for the help..

    Well i took my first decent spin last night (about 3-4 miles) getting to know the bike and it was easy enough in the dark as you could see any traffic coming a mile away in front or behind so i could concentrate on the bike and not the traffic(its a quiet road anyway).
    The only thing is that the inside of my visor fogged up immediately and stayed that way making it useless so i had it up fully most of the time. I have an open faced helmet with a visor. I have heard about things like pinlock, de-misting sprays and such things like fairy liquid & coke???

    Does anyone have any tips on how to keep it de-misted. I used to use Savlon when i went paint-balling a few years ago to keep the goggles clear, is that what people use for bikes or is there something better?

    On the same subject, i have read that i can get anti-rain spray for the outside of the visor too, any suggestions.

    By the way last nights first ride was fun & scary at the same time and cant wait to get out there this evening again.

    I just use washing up liquid you just rub it into the visor and then buff it off. It usually lasts a few months and it's cheaper than buying sprays etc.

    Both are good (Foggy is better, as it directs the moist air out of the helmet, with a Pinlock you get condensation eventually and it doesn't help if you wear glasses. I currently use both) but the Foggy will only fit full face helmets and I doubt a Pinlock would fit, or be much use on, an open face either. Why OP would want to wear an open face at this time of year is another question...

    Couldnt get a full face that felt comfortable so i opted for an open face. I tried a lot of helmets and found them very tight.
    So the pinlock and foggy seem to be out but i will try the washing up thing and see how i get on.

    Nonsense!

    If you have an open face helmet, the only thing you need to do is to lift the visor slightly - to let more air through. It's not like you are going to get colder...

    ninja900, I have the exact same problem as you with glasses.

    New XR1000 with pinlock.......... Check.
    Glasses fit in the helmet........... Check.

    Fogging up............................ Check.

    GRR!

    Aah well, I think I deserve a new Foggy...
