i have 2 dvd drives in my pc but last week both disappeared from my computer screen & are unusable bar the trays opening & closing. tried system restore ...nothing. tried checking the connections ... nothing. even tried using an external dvd drive to reboot the system but get a message that it's not a cd drive & cannot be used for this as reboot discs are on cd.
anyone got any ideas on how to solve this problem????

Do they show up under Device Manager in the System applet in Control Panel? Do they show up in the BIOS menu?

When you reboot your computer, it should say something like 'Press DEL (F2, or other key perhaps) to enter setup. If they are active, the DVD drives should show up somewhere on the first page along with the hard drive information.

Check to make sure that jumper settings on the rear of the drive are correct, one drive Master and the other Slave, maybe it got switched around when you checked the cables before. See the picture below, 2 is where the jumper settings are located. Don't worry about the rest of the diagram. Do you use any of those image mounting software, PowerISO or something else?

do you have any mapped or shared drives or usb keys ?

XP is decidedly inferior to everything from Dos 2.11 to windows 2000 when it comes to assigning drive letters. Instead of handing you the next available unused letter it will happily reuse an existing one.

right click my computer etc. into drive manager and see if it's listed there - if it is right click and assign a new letter

or check in device manager to see if one or two drives listed.
