I was thinking about getting a new flash for my 350D. I have sigma 2.8 18/50 and the 70-300mm F4-5.6. I mostly shot family stuff and gig shots. My problem is that at a few gigs now I've been asked to take headshots of people someing in and the flash on the 350 seems to screw up the shots.

I'm on a limited budget at the moment so eithe second hand or entryleve new but I have no idea what to look for. Any suggestions?

    Get an f/1.4 lens. :)

Seriously, a flash can drain a lot of life out of gig photos.

lens isnt an option as I wouldnt use it enough to justify the purchase. and as I said I wouldnt be using the flash for band shots just of the crowd/people/party/etc/

Fair enough then, go for maybe a second hand Canon 430 off Ebay?

But at the same time, the Canon 50mm 1.8 is only about 100 quid...

Yeah buy the 50mm f1.8 and crank the ISO up a bit.

You will get a better look from the photos.

thanks lads but I already had the 50mm and sold it was I wasnt getting the use out of it. I tried using it for these kind of shots and it was still too dark, Plus I found that the prime was a pain in the ass when trying to move back and forth from the subject in a crowded pub tp get everyone in the frame.
    I'll check out the 430.

I have used to 18-50 f2.8 with the onboard flash and I was very impressed with it. Give it a go before you commit to getting a flash. I wont use a flash unless I really have to, my highest f number is f2.8 and lowest is f1.8 so plenty of scope before the flash goes on. The 430ex got a great write up.
    :)

i got a 430 EX and it's the biz for group shots, like firing squad type ones! :)
haven't used it really in any informal situation apart from in a church, it takes a bit of getting used to as well - a diffuser is probably a good idea, have to get one myself.

Get an external flash. Of course, you'll look like a spa wandering around with his camera with a corded flash lamp but you can position it off to the side for sexy/classy shadows rather than ugly flat lighting (as from a head-on source). I honestly have no idea how it might work outside a studio, but I assume you can get smaller versions of the lamps I'm used to.
