Dissappearing messages

Twice now I've had emails from MBNA asking me to log on,I've learned enough about phishing (spelling) not to bother. I use firefox but my hotmail account is on IE and I access it through that (not sure if that's relevant)The last time I got one of these I opened it,read some, ignored and backed up to go back to the messages. The message I had just been reading was gone from the folder so I thought maybe I had deleted it. Tonight again I got another message and did the same thing, backed up and no sign of it in my message folder. This may seem like a silly question but have these people who send out these messages got a way of dissappearing the message (i know that sounds stupid) if the link isn't accessed?I just can't understand where the messages have gone to.I opened other messages and backed up and yes they were there.Has the technology advanced so far that they can do a cligon jobby and cloak the message. I know I didn't delete the message because I never do,I read all of the message and delete them all together. Anyone else noticed strange goings on with dodgy messages.
PS, I'm not drunk, stoned or anything else.
