Ok so there will be three compatible controls, the remote & nunchuk, the gamecube one and the classic one.

And there will be three types of games, Wii, Gamecube and classic(This might be split into N64 and pre N64?)

My question is what controls will work with what games?

Ive got a good feeling that the classic controller is for people who dont own gamecube versions, so I think they will be interchangable. This means we can use either for gamecube games or retro games.

Its makes sense as I dont see nintendo or retailers providing customers with gamecube controllers for the Wii's lifespan. I also see the wii-mote being used for retro games that arent too demanding in terms of buttons needed. Its not a coincidence that the thing looks like a NES controller when you turn it on its side.

But if Zelda is going to be the norm, we will only be able to play Wii games with the Wii controller.

The Gamecube controller does not work for Virtual Console games.

The Gamecube controller is strictly for Gamecube games. Wavebird will work.

Wiimote is for Wii games and may work for NES games (really likely) but nothing confirmed I don't think.

Classic controller is for VC games. It may work with GC games but it isn't a safe assumption. Nintendo intend to release Wiimakes of GC games with Wii functionality so might not want people that didn't own GC's to be able to access the back catalogue. They might want to make it more difficult by forcing Wii users that didn't own a GC to search for scarce GC controllers on store shelves/ebay to help sales of Wiimakes.
