Mail on Tiger

I have a iBook G4 laptop, it has Mail as part of the Tiger package. I don't have a username or password for it because you have to pay. Anytime on a webpage if I click on contact to get the email address it automatically opens Mail and requests a username/password before I can even quit Mail. Is there any way to disable Mail completely or should I just delete it, cos it's really annoying. I don't even get to see the email address I want to contact now because Mail requests a username/password first (which I don't have!) Argggh

Also can you download Outlook Express or something like that to use with an external email account? Is that free?

    Thanks!

You'd choose Outlook Express over Mail? :o
... I use Mail with my Gmail account; you should be able to set it up with Hotmail or whatever you use no problem.
In fact, I prefer Mail to Mozilla Thunderbird (another email program).

Also, simply try Ctrl-clicking the contact & choose "copy email address" (or similar).

Using Mail is free. I've used various email clients over the years, including Claris Emailer, Outlook Express, Eudora, Gyazmail, Musashi and others (I kid ye not, the list goes on).

Mail is now my favourite email client.

Contrary to say, it is free to use. I think you are confusing it with getting an email account (and other services) from mac.com, which costs €99 a year.

You can use Mail with any POP or IMAP email account, such as that provided by your ISP, or the free Gmail service.

I think the OP might be slightly confused, Mail is asking for the username and password of a valid email account not an authorisation or purchase validation.

You cannot send email without a valid account. Your ISP will have given you an email account and their support site will no doubt provide you with the other info - SMTP server POP3 server etc. to set it up. Get these details and come back and we can help you configure mail. Forget Outlook Express, Mail is easier to use. All browsers will try to start the default mail application when you click on an email address.

I use Entourage as my work E-Mail account and it is the default e-mail account, I also use Mail for my Eircom.net account. It is possible to make something other than Mail to be your default application, just go in to preferences. But as the guys say, you have Mail, it's free, why not use it?

    OP.

You are getting the .mac services and mail services mixed up.

If you have .mac then mail will automatically configure, but you can simply add ANY pop3 or Imap email account to mail.

Just go into preferences and then go into accounts and click the + button to add a new account. Make sure you have all the info required.

If your stuck I'd suggest you visit the macrumors forums sections. A whole army of mac users at your disposal.
