Hi all, bought a place in johnstown, navan recently and hoping to move in this side of christmas, I've done a couple of runs up and down and its about 35 miles from where i work to home, (dont know the Kms) is there anyone doing this run in the mornings, if so how long is it taking them, and finally is the commute from there really as bad as people make out. I start in Sandyford at 8am finish at 4:30.

    Yes, it is that bad.

At least you are working 8 - 4.30, which helps.

Be prepared to leave the house before six to avoid conjestion at the Blackbull Junction.

Depart Navan at 6.30am and head for Trim. From Trim take the Dempsey highway to Kilcock. At Kilcock, jump onto the M4 and ride it as far as Lucan. Then head onto the Outer Ring Road over towards the N7. But at the N7 interchange, dont go onto the N7. Take the first turn left off the roundabout to a small road that will take you past the Green Isle hotel.(local road) At the end of that road you'll reach a T junction. Turn right back onto the N7 and sneak across 3 lanes of traffic to turn for the Belgard road. Head up the Belgard road and turn left at the 3rd set of lights (Luas tracks cross road here) Follow that road to M50 interchange and head southbound. Next stop Sandyford!

Its worth a shot as the N3 to M50 route is a complete joke.

Isn't that a bit of a mad journey?

I do this trip daily.I live in Johnstown also.I leave my house at 6.15 and head trough Kentstown on to the N2 on to the Ashbourne Bypass and then on to the M50.It takes me 30 mins to get to the M50 and another 30 mins to get to work.I take exit 14 as I work in Central Park beside Bewleys Hotel. The traffic is fine until you reach the M50.Its heavy but moving.I would advise you to get Easypass as it is handy if traffic is heavy around the toll.I then leave work at 3.15-3.30 and usually arrive home within 1 hour or 1 hour 15.I either head through the toll and on to the M3 or exit on to the N4 and home through Lucan etc.I find traffic is always heavier around this time of the year with christmas shopping from now till xmas. It's not as bad as people make it out to be.I enjoy driving (dunno about you) but you just have to discipline yourself and go to bed early.I always go to bed around 10.30-11.The hardest part is getting out of bed in the morning, but I find once I'm out of the bed I am fine.P.S. Try and buy a diesel car.It makes alot more sense as you will be clocking yo around 2k miles a month. From door to door its 40 miles for me.Best of luck.Where in Johnstown did you buy?

Sounds mad, but its actually very quick and avoids the M50 toll blockade. Ive done it.Most importantly, you are always moving and from a driving perspective, this is seen as "progessive". (something to do with our brains apparently. If the journey takes longer, but you don't sit in traffic, then your brain registers that as quicker) Crawling along in traffic utilises more brain activity than open road driving.

    Apparently.

Seen it on Top Gear years ago and in practise, it appears to work for me anyhow. Anyone else care to shed light on this?

That's good. It's a pity that more flexi-time positions aren't out there instead of most people starting work at nine and finishing at half five.

Getting from many parts of Navan to the the N2 is terrible at the moment with the Kentstown Road closed at Athlumney. (Which is good news for Johnstown because of the broadband etc but brutal for everyone else)

On a seperate question, does anyone know anything about a start or completion date for the Blanchardstown - Swords link road?

Sorry, I mean the end-to-end journey, not the route.

It might sound mad but believe it or not there ARE people doing commutes of twice this(35miles) back and forth to Dublin from parts of Leinster. It's mad alright but people are willing to do it all the same, particularly if working hours can be flexible. Long term with the price/availibility of oil becoming a greater issue I worry about the sustainability of this set up.
