And one of the chief engineers interviewed on Radio 1 this morning said that this date has been plucked out of the air by the newspapers. If all the trials and safety checks are faultless then a pre christmas opening is possible (and this is the port tunnel we're talking about here...). So basically, no chance until 2007... :(

The interview will turn up here at some stage

I was driving past the northern end of it the other day and they were clearly testing the electronic signs, one of them had a large message stating 'Queue's Ahead - Expect Delays' would of loved to have got a snap of it.

Hopefully not a sign (sic) of things to come.

The following is part of a reply I received from the Press Officer after I enquired about the opening day (Received 24 Oct):

A date has not yet been set for the opening of the Tunnel but an announcement will be made shortly through the National Press and Media, and the Tunnel will open before Christmas. Mechanical and Electrical Testing of the Tunnel is ongoing and almost complete and Emergency Services (Fire Brigade Gardai Ambulance) are in the process of completing their drills and training in the Tunnel in conjunction with the operator Transroute.

A 10k Road Race will be held in the Tunnel prior to opening this year. This will be a one off, historic event and is probably the best opportunity to see the tunnel and the scale of what has been undertaken in Dublin. The start will be on the toll plaza at the East Wall Road end and travel through the Tunnel, turning at Whitehall and returning to East Wall via the second tube. Information on this will be carried on

So it appears the press officer and the chief engineer are saying two different things.

What do ye all think, will its opening make a difference to Dublin City traffic? Will it just completely muck up the M50? For those coming from north couty Dublin like Swords etc, will it make a difference, good or bad?

That would really cause a mess - a slip road merging with the overtaking lane!?!?! :D

Actually, it didn't occur to me but this tunnel will be great for winding down the windows, drop a gear and let rip (not speeding!)! The engine noise will be great. Can only really do it at night though due to traffic volumes!
Maybe the toll will be worth it!

The Dublin Port Tunnel will open to traffic on Wednesday 20th December 2006

Dublin City Council and the National Roads Authority today announced that An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern TD will open the Dublin Port Tunnel on Wednesday 20th December 2006. It will provide a dedicated motorway, toll free for Heavy Goods Vehicles and buses, from Dublin Port to the National Roads Network (M50). All other vehicles will pay tolls ranging from €12 at peak hours to €6 and €3 off peak.

The Dublin Port Tunnel 10km Charity Run will be held at 11am on Sunday 10th December.

A once-off 10km Charity Run (under IAAF/ AAI rules) will be held inside the new Dublin Port Tunnel on .10,000 runners can be accommodated in the Run and Dublin City Council is confident that there will be a full turnout. The Run is being organised by Dublin City Council, in conjunction with Clonliffe Harriers and additional sponsorship is being provided by Dublin Crystal and Kellogg Ireland. Toll Scheme for the Dublin Port Tunnel

In accordance with section 58 of the Roads Act, 1993, as amended by section 272 of the Planning and Development Act, 2000 the above toll scheme as adopted by the National Roads Authority will come into force on the 16th December 2006.
Hmmm, I wonder if they are going to let some people through early.
