My laptop Hard Drive gave in recently. Several of the first clusters (or sectors, i forget which word) are damaged. Im wondering how does this damage occur?

    Where is the fan located?

    or

How many times have you droped it?

    or

    How old is it?

A couple of factors are involved I believe. If the drive is not getting enough cooling, normal aging factor, dropping it a few times probably won't do much good for it either. :)

    Drive is 2 years old.
Laptop never dropped, infact rarely moved.
Laptop is used intensively so heat is a problem, but for that exact reason Fan is allways running on highest speed, and got a cooler pad for underneath

    Good chance its age so...

Well since you took the precausion of cooling I assume you wouldnt leave it near a speaker (would need to relitvly big)

Yes I copied you obviously, our posts are 3 minutes..*ahem* apart. You win, hurray!

OP, I normally have mine raised up on a book or whatever to make sure its getting the airflow it needs. If the fan is always running at the highest speed all the time then it seems to me like its not doing what it should be (like my old shoddy Dell rarely runs at the highest speed).

Not near any speakers at all :(

And really for a Hard Drive, I think 2 years is fairly young :(

I used to use some kids bricks to get airflow underneath, but then I went out and bought this which by the way doesnt really do much more than the bricks did, how and ever.

I had a program to control the fan speed, so when I would be doing something CPU intensive I would make the fan stay at its highest speed.
