New hand luggage rules - bags in bags ???

Basically I'm wondering will I get away with this.

I'm moving to Oz next monday night, typically the day after the restrictions come in. The size restriction isn't worrying me too much. What is worrying me is the fact I'm stopping off at Heathrow so I suspect there will be no bending off the rules there. In my hand luggage I want to take my laptop, ipod, camera and camcorder etc, basically all the gadgets and wires etc because they are worth more than everything else in my rucksack and I don't want them thrown around or fecked.

I've tried every way to fit everything into the laptop bag, but it's not going to happen, so I have an extra little camera case that i can jam the rest into. 2 Pieces of hand luggage, but I was think of putting these into a big canvas shopping bag that is still within the size restrictions. So There's my one piece, just so happens there's bags inside the bags if you know what I mean.

Will I get away with this or am I better to stick the smaller bag in the rucksack and just take the laptop on. Considering its a 25 hour trip I wouldn't mind a change of clothes too, which I could also fit in the canvas bag with the rest of the stuff.

In theory there should be no problems, but nowadays it's hard to say for sure. Perhaps if you check with the BAA, who run Heathrow, you might get a definitive answer.

Just remember that when going through security, you'll have to take the laptop out, so make sure it's easily accessible or you may end up having your bag(s) trawled through.

FWIW, you can get a backpack style laptop bag made by Targus. I got one in the Laptop Shop in St. Stephen's Green Centre and it holds my laptop, two cameras, spare lenses, chargers, MP3 player, PSP, notebook, pens, novel, and still has room for more! It has loads of pockets, so you can get all sorts of things into it!

The BAA will get you to place your bag within a frame to test it's suitability for taking into the cabin, if it doesn't fit they don't make exceptions. The size must include all straps, bulges etc..,

If you are transferring flights within the same terminal in Heathrow you may not have to go through security screen at all.

Irish flights into LHR go into T1, Flights to Far East, Australia etc. fly out of T3 and there is a security check as you come into T3.

Feck that's a pity I'll have to change terminals. I went ahead and got a laptop bag like the targus one in argos. Does the job grand, should be able to fit the lot in that. Thanks for the tips.

Absolutely stupid rule that is only going to cause more and more delays, anytime i travel to the UK i usually just have a backpack with me containing a toothbrush/toothpaste and deodorant, etc that i can bring on the plane with me,now ive to put this bag through check in adding more time onto my journey.

It also makes a mockery of the online check in system unless you don't have any of the list of items that you cant bring onto the plane in your bag when it's clear that the majority of people will have at least one of if not more of these items meaning they will have to queue to check their bag in meaning delays galore, how stupid can they get when they are supposedly trying to cut down on delays, i fly regulary so this will directly affect me.

I had the same concerns but I've taken 3 flights since the new arrangements came in to effect and there have been surprisingly few delays or long lines at the airport. Also, I have been able to take my bag on board with me each time, I just carry smaller quantities of shampoo, toothpaste, etc., and that's the requirement covered.

Yeah, and I've taken 3 more since then :(

Still no problems with the new rules, and a slight delay on only one flight as a result of the extra security.

It won't matter if there are bags within bags as long as your main hand luggage is an actual bag and not a shopping bag.

But, it must be not more than 56 centimetres long [approximately 22 inches], 45 centimetres high [approximately 17.5 inches], 25 centimetres deep [approximately 9.85 inches] including wheels, handles, side pocket).

I reckon you'd fit everything you have, except the camcorder into that size bag; think a school bag packed with books.

    Cheers
