Got my new AF-S DX VR Zoom-Nikkor 18-200mm f3.5-5.6G IF ED (to give it its full title !)

Ordered on 16 August and arrived today from Technikdirekt.de

Got it for the price I ordered(€699) it at even though it has gone up on their site to €734

Not too bad considering Hong eBayers are looking for at least 500 sterling and I see its €849 on Berminghams site.

Looking forward to giving it a work out - there might be an 18-70 for sale soon

Very nice. Seems to be the holy grail of lenses at the moment. Will be interested to see some pics from it to see why it is so highly coveted.

PS Good to hear from another Nikon user. I thought this was a Canon board going by the amount of them at the meets recently ;)

Congrats, that's one hell of a zoom range.

the focal length is what makes this lens special. Not to take away from it's versitility, I think it's a "jack of all master of none" type of lens. I must admit to not using one personally, only going on samples and other peoples reviews.

CrowdedHouse, would you post some raws-neffs at different focus ranges - I'm curious how that lense performs. Something where we can appreciate the level of details :)

That's what would be known as a 'leading question' and in a Nikon thread of all places!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,908 ✭✭✭CrowdedHouse

    Yea,the focal lenght range.I have been using an 18-70 and a 70-210 or 28-200

Changing lenses 'cos I feel I have the 'wrong' one on is a pain in the butt - rooting in the bag for lenses, looking for caps and exposing the camera to dust etc.

I should be able to retire the 18-70 and 70-210 and leave the 28-200 on my F4 for the odd time I use it.

€845 / £550ST  from wey cameras in the UK, the only people in the entire world (apart from shady doodes on ebay) who had one in stock last week.

Tried Gunnes on wexford st. and loads of others and rather than get put on indefinite waiting lists everywhere, said I'd pay the premium ta f00k.

Primarily bought for its broad range in slow shutter panning shots assisted by vibration reduction - will report back with findings :)

    looks the business alright.

an 18-200 (or 28-300) is a sweet bit of kit if you can t be arsed swapping lenses all the time. I know it gets on my nerves.

Ah, I don't mind it too much. Tbh, the lenses that I use the most are my 30mm 1.4 and 10-20 4-5.6, so neither are particularly big or heavy.

For gigs, I've pretty much stuck with my 30mm for the last...well..pretty much since I've gotten it, but before I had that, it'd be a matter of changing lenses several times during it...you just learn how to do it really fast!

28-300 is fine for you with your full-frame 5D and deep student pockets, but the gap in the Canon lineup is for the crop frame equivalent.

    Initial impressions are good, nice sharp lens at all apertures, nothing scientific- just some snaps through a dirty 3rd floor window at mega-slow shutter speeds ;

I agree that VR is a great , but in your shots it's not doing much, if anything -your panning is doing it all (very well I might add)

or is it easier to do pan shots using a VR lens?

It can interfere with panning as it detects the movement of the lens and tries to correct it. For this reason there are normally two VR or IS modes, one that kills all vibrations and one that kills vibrations at right angles to the panning direction. Basically if you are panning from left to right it will kill any up/down vibration. You can set the modes via a switch on the lens barrel.
It is the biz though, I got a few keepers that I simply could not have got without it.

1/80sec was my previous limit for panning without VR (at least above 100mm), 1/8sec would normally result in a big blurry (and interestingly abstract) mess :D

That is one monster of a zoom range. I thought my 28-100 was cool...

wow - that says it all. I never thought about VR adding advantage to that type of photography.

I have seen your bike pics before in previous posts, your ability to get great pans is outstanding.

have fun with the new lens

    You should post some photos.

    You should post some photos.

I only bought the R1 a couple of weeks ago and I'm not sure exactly how to post photos but as soon as I figure out how I will post some. As far as I know Canon are using the same sensor in their new 400D so I'm sure results should be similar..
