Passport due up in 5 months

My mate is off to the States on Monday week, rang me last night in a tizzy about something he heard about his passport.

It's due to expire in April, but he has heard that if it is within 6 months of expiry that he might not be allowed to travel. Surely this is incorrect, an expiry date is the only date after which a passport is invalid.

    Can anyone help ?

    Paul

Not nessecarily. Some countries insist on you having a passport with at least 6 months validity on it.

Most countries outside of Europe require that you have at least 6 months left on your passport.

However, I just got this from the US Embassy site, if you want to double check phone the embassy:

Validity of my Irish/EU Passport for Travel to the United States
In most cases, to enter the United States, you must have a passport that is valid for at least six months after the date you enter. However, the United States has an agreement with some countries (including Ireland) that allows you to enter on a current passport up to the actual date of expiration. An Irish/EU passport need remain valid only for the duration of the holder's stay in the United States. However, if you are traveling visa-free on the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and your passport is valid for less than 90 days, you will generally be admitted only until the date the passport expires. I travelled to New York last year with 4 month 2 weeks remaining on my Irish Passport, I had no hassle at all, They do ask for an address though, but I was able to provide that of where I was staying. I have travelled to the states several times and had no trouble.

I was singled out once by Shannon Security and asked several questions and had all my hand luggage checked intrinsically aswell as being thoroughly felt up for hidden contraband, It seems to be the norm to randomly check people there and I guess they must check a certain percentage of people before boarding. Otherwise no problems.
