Just heavy build up of lime scale. Get a strong toilet cleaner, not the regular supermarket stuff. Put it, leave it for a while and then attack it :D

Maybe the Op has a lot of iron in their diet...
Have you tried using a toilet brush?

The rust stains are caused by iron/steel bolts which hold the cistern in place. These corroded over time and leaked causing these stains which run from the bottom of the cistern into the bowl. Btw, tried vinegar, lemon juice, bleach(bad idea - seems to 'fix' stain) and other detergents but nothing works.

Go to a hardware store, get a small bottle of ceramic tile cleaner. Might do the job.

Wife just got a bottle of Domestos New Pink with limescale and squirted it on and hey presto.

    Hi baby builder
...Or the pan may be damaged, ie in the old days it was common to sprinkle "Vim" powder ( a scourer) on to pan and leave for a while before rinsing. Absolutely the wrong thing to do as it damages the porceline and the only viable option is to replace it. And in those days, days when coloured suites were popular, you can't get a replacement now.
