Didn't this happen a good while back? So far as I remember the guitar needed repairs of some sort. Hazy recollection and no source but I don't think it was stolen/vandalised.

I certainly hope it wasn't vandalised. Some fecking gobsheens alright.

yeah i think the strings on the original guitar were not tough enough to handle people just touching and pulling at them, dont think was necessirally vandallism, just over enthusiasm and they were putting thicker better fixed strings on to it

Think it was removed for repairs, because it got damaged from people standing on it for photographs,etc......

I think it should've been put indoors to stop this kind of crap happening to it.....?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,165 ✭✭✭✭astrofool

Or put in a steel cage so no one can touch it ever again....

It's a statue, and it's on the street so that people can get their picture taken with it, if it needed repairs, or if vandals made it come apart like above, then it wasn't designed properly, unlike, say molly malone, or the other many statues in Dublin.

no way, its a statue of a local icon, it has to be outside, it should be built strong enough to be able to handle whatever the public has to throw at it surely?

It is actually a bass, not a guitar.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭Don1

The original strings were actual bass strings so they could be broken by fools easily enough particularly after being in the weather for a while.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,228 ✭✭✭bluto63

technically a bass is a guitar...

If this is a picture from ages ago then yeah it was taken for repairs. Apparently all the machine heads were gone from people taking "souvenirs"

The could hire a large group of burly men to be minders? Or, put up statues of these big burly men to simulate minders? But then they couldn't offer any protection. No, go with the real life minders. Just imagine them battering tourists and/or skangers who get to close! It'd be great.

I can't remember if it's an urban myth but,
didn't the ladies near the ha'penny bridge have their handbags nicked ?

    Correct

Statue is in the perfect location!! Art should be accessible to the public - not hidden away where you have to make a effort to go to see it. Its just like Philo just hanging around town on an afternoon or a Saturday night.

Don't think its an urban myth - think those bags were actually taken!!!

I remeber hearing on the radio it was in for a repair of some sort, no real malicious intent was involved.
