"If you think you don't like westerns, make an exception for this landmark miniseries from 1989 - it's as close to perfect as a small-screen epic can be. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones star as two ageing ranchers who launch a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. Written and intricately plotted by Larry McMurtry (who more recently won an Oscar for his work on Brokeback Mountain), it's got a fabulous cast that also includes Robert Urich, Danny Glover and Diane Lane. The story is gripping, the landscape is wonderful and, for my money, Robert Duvall gives the performance of his life. Four feature-length episodes may sound like a big investment, but this repays every moment."

Awww, I LOVE Lonesome Dove. If only I had BBC4! It is a brilliant series - haven't seen it in years.
