I had a long document written of ten pages and had saved on the 4th page, I went to open a JPEG along side the letter on the desktop and accidentally opened the saved MS WORD file and I got "Do you want to revert to the saved "Essay" ? I clicked yes   and it erased everything I had written back to where I saved at page 4.

Any way of correcting my gaffe (I know netwhizkid  eh??) would there be a temp file stored or something?? Otherwise I shall have to go typing again.

The PC (WIN XP) has since been switched off.

    Any help is muchos gratzias.

If you have autosave turned on, or even if you don't, there may be cached version somewhere. Do a search on your machine for all doc files, inculding hidden ones and sort by date. Occasionally you might get lucky and the last couple might be cached versions. Its a slim chance though.

For future ref always save a few version of a doc 20061031 1201.doc, 20061031 1231.doc even as you are working etc. I don't use autosave as ironically I found it to crash and corrupt documents.

Sometimes they are cached in the Windows Temp folder (or C:\Documents and Settings\User Name\Local Settings\Temp), no? Otherwise hope you can remember in the morning. :)

This is windows and word, so they could be anywhere.

Your second mistake was turning the computer off.

You could be buggered now. Have a look for temp files as others have mentioned.

If you really don't want to write it again then look at data recovery software but most cost money.

Also might be worth your while seeing is there an auto-save revision of the document or did Word delete everything relating to the 10 page version when you reverted to the 4 page version.
On the File menu, click Versions.
    Click Save Now.
In the Comments on version box, type descriptive information about the version you're saving.
