TV3 has appointed former Eircom group commercial director David McRedmond as its chief executive.

He replaces Rick Hetherington, who is leaving the company after its takeover by private equity house Doughty Hanson for €265m.

Mr McRedmond was responsible for strategy, regulatory affairs, public policy and communications at Eircom.

He was previously managing director of Eircom Enterprises, responsible for the development of a portfolio of businesses, including the launch of 11811 directory enquiries.

Mr McRedmond made it known that he planned to leave Eircom after the telecoms company was taken over by Babcock & Brown. Earlier this year he was linked to the chief executive position at An Post, which subsequently went to Donal Connell. Mr McRedmond (44) will take up his position at TV3 in early December 2006, and the Broadcasting Commission of Ireland (BCI) has been notified of the appointment.

Dublin-born Mr McRedmond began his career with Waterstones, and he helped to establish its business the US in the early 1990s.

Mr McRedmond said yesterday: "Since returning to Ireland in 1999, I have watched the successful establishment by TV3 of a strong brand with a distinct identity that appeals and delivers to Irish consumers and advertisers."

He said he intends to build on "the strong base which TV3 has established as Ireland's leading independent broadcaster".

God CEO's talk a load of waffle.

TV3's brand is whatever ITV's brand is, and is about as Irish as a "pint of bitter"
