I was at the Sky Bar in the Guinness Storehouse the other night for a poker lig and growing bored of snapping pics of poker celebs sipping champagne I turned my camera to everything and anything. Got a couple of nice pics I need to post process and this one that I uploaded directly from my camera. Its one of those pics that has nothing to do with the photographer and everything to do with luck and flaw.... but it kinda tickled me because of the location :)

    Flickr link here.

    Sandstorm.JPG

it looks like a sandstorm or something.

I liked the sky, not so much the city lights, hope ya don't mind this

I could PS the city out, or mess with it but then I feel it loses something. The picture itself isnt particularly interesting, what IS interesting is the combination of:
    No photoshoppery
Taken on top of Guinness's building
Bears a striking similarity to a pint of Guinness settling

If I wanted to I could PS the sky onto a pint, or put the guinness logo where the city is, but honestly I think the best thing about this is the curiousity that it hasn't been altered and was shot on top of the Guinness building. That kind of serendipity gives me the giggles :)

btw, if anyone wants to take a photo of mine and muck with it for giggles or improvement, I have absolute no problem at all. If anyone wanted to use them for something serious, they need but ask. If its commericial, then I'll ask for a fee simply to protect the jobs of professionals who I dont like to see undercut by companys.

In keeping with the motif, this turned out ok, though I wish it were sharper. The light didnt really allow for sharp pics (this took about 3 seconds to capture!)

Taken in an old dublin pub, lit by a candle.

I'm going to work on a few like that as I want to improve close up shots (Macros?).
I like the way my mind kinda fills in the rest of the pint (in fact, when I notice that the G isnt there the mathematician/control-freak in me gets very upset!)

I really like the sky in the 1st sot but the 2nd one (the close up shot of the pint) is really super!

There is so much to like about it!

I know that it is early but I am already looking forward to my 1st pint tonight now!

I think I would have noticed a firework going off in my local...

Oh, I see... you mean photoshop a firework into the pic?
I have something in mind I might try in the next few days.

Nope, as in the candle in the reflection looks like a firework going off, highlighting the Guinness!

I don't like either of these pictures. the first one's sky is ok, but the lights show camera shake. Maybe try a higher iso or a tripod?

The second one is lacking in something. It just bores me....

    Just my opinion. :)

You should try switching to RAW, for night shots like this the camera will almost never get it right when it comes to white balance, this is why your picture has a red colour cast throughout. With jpeg you can only correct the problem so much.

Here's the pic with some slight tweaks:

The red cast is because of crappy dublin's crappy orange lights. Its not really a white balance issue, nothing can look white under those lights, its a bright orange. It looks like that to the human eye.

The photo has a red-ish orange cast because that is the colour of most of the lights in the city reflecting off whatever cloud cover there was around. I don't particularly like the tweaked version because it's almost featureless.

Devore - for the original photograph, I like the idea a lot. I don't know what kind of a camera you have but what I have done for similar photographs in the past (lacking such things as a tripod and remote control always at the ready) is set the camera down on a flat surface such as a wall, and use the timer to take the photograph.

Good idea Calina, I've been meaning to get a small beanbag (thanks to Fajitas suggestion!) and use the timer. I've already bought a monopod which is working our great, I just didnt bring it that night because I didnt really think ahead! I've a 350D and only just started so all these hints and tips are gold!
