Is Internet Comedy Sh1t?

About a week or two ago I was watching this countdown on Channel 4, the 100 greatest funny moments or something. It wasnt exclusively from sitcoms or stand up- it also took in amusing news items, notorious chatshow appearances etc etc and also some online humour.

So they were playing a video clip Im sure most of you have seen, of some guy with a stick pretending to be Luke Skywalker fighting the whatevertheyweres (not much of a sci fi fan myself). And they had a few pundits commentating, one of them was a Scottish guy, comedian or something, and he said something like

"There are people in this world, cab drivers in London for example, who will tell you the funniest moment in comedy was Del Boy falling through the bar, people who fail to appreciate true, brilliant comedy"

And it got me thinking. How in the **** can you even compare a character in the greatest sitcom of all time to some prick dancing around with a stick to the Star Wars theme music? The clip wasnt even remotely funny for **** sake! Another clip that somehow made the top 100 was one id seen on a mates Bebo page, some glasses wearing severely overweight lad of about 18 singing and bumping his head to that cheesy "no mah no mah no ma yayyy" song from about two summers back (hey, it mightnt work typed, if I hummed it to you you would know it :) ). How in the **** does this make the cut? It wasnt remotely funny. Generally on the Humour forum I avoid the flash animations and "funny videos" as 98% are utter balls. There are a few great ones (the Miss France does a Zidane one, I nearly cried the 1st time I saw it :D ) but there is a huge amount of bollix. Anyone agree?

Heres your problem. You don't seem to understand that humour is subjective. Other people find stuff that you don't find funny, funny. They also might not find what you find funny, funny.

And list shows are all **** anyway.

I am sorry, but starwars kid and numa numa are fantastic. Dell Boy is scripted, this is just genuinly funny. The star wars kid because it was never ment to be seen, and he is just taking it so seriously yet is screwing everything up, oh, it's brilliant, and the edits make it even better.

Numa numa, because, well, did you even watch it?!

    Internet comedy = funny.

Yeah you see this reminds me of when i went to see Team America, i didnt find it remotely funny but my friends were in tears laughin, i think its just down to the type of humour involved. my opinion is on how intelligent the person is to find this kinda thing funny..

I know im not gonna get a good response for this one :)

When I see e-mails from people with links to allegedly funny clips on YouTube or whatever, I feel like screaming, but actually a lot of them turn out to be very funny (numa numa is the highlight but the weatherguy and the cockroach was also class). DelBoy falling through the bar was hilarious at the time, but realism seems to crack people up nowadays. Me included.

Internet comedy is basically the same as any other type of comedy. If it were shown on something like "You've been framed", you'd be laughing.

I always feel a sense of dread when i see the link on emails but i tend to click it anyway and am usually pleasently surprised :)

I've never really found fools and horses to be funny, and when I see that "falling through the bar" clip winning funniest thing ever in the worlds history, I aways wonder why everyone thinks its so good. Even if it was funny at the time, its about 15 years later and everyone has seen it dozens of times, how can it still get that raucous laughter? People crying with laughter and unable to talk over something thats very old, very scripted and quite dated.(and in my opinion was never that funny in the first place)

I dunno, Ive pretty much given up on clicking links to video humour online as so often they are just pure ****e. Most of the decent stuff is clips that have been ripped from tv shows (saw this ****ing hilarious one of what the Sopranos would be like if it was bought by one of the main American "no swearing/nudity" networks, classic stuff :D ). Dont get me wrong, I like alot of online humour such as, lets say, the job ad that was posted up for Ireland manager a few hours after the Cyprus massacre, but alot of the video stuff that wasnt on tv first is just plain crap.

I agree with Weedhead, if you find a young fat kid having the piss taken out of him by some prick who told him "listen if you do this for my webcam the birds will be all over ya" then gwan ahead, but some of us like our comedy a bit more intelligent ;) But then again the internet is full of stupid people- Ive 3 messages on Bebo today. One is a "please forward this or we will close your account for being inactive" another is "resend this and you will find true love in 10 days" and the last is "pass this on or you will die within the week" with various cases of people around the world mentioned.

Honest to god like, come on.....

you need to log off the internet for good if it is all that stupid

Channel101 is hilarious - especially "Yacht Rock" and "Dohar: Lord of Beasts" - www.channel101.com. Also good is www.channel102.net - check out "Jesus Christ Supercop". Okay it's not Arrested Development but it's a lot better than some of the rubbish on the telly.

A mate tell me to go to this site (cant even remember the name of it) were this black american footballer or somethin is batterin lumps out of everybody in the office that he now works for. He told me it was the funniest video ever. I didnt laugh once. Another was the evolution of dance. Didnt laugh once. Maybe i'm just a dry sh1te. The best comedy i get on the net is just from your average joe posting on a forum. Pighead is a good example.

Alot of the stuff posted on the internet as being 'funny' just isn't. Loads of crap like the stuff off that awful Kirsty Gallacher show. Endless clips of people falling over. How fcuking hilarious. There is some funny stuff on the net but 90% of it, like most other 'comedy' is just sh1t.

You can't compare the two. TV is produced and aimed at the mass market. Internet is someones hobby or stuff done for their own amusement that others may or may not find funny.

Comedy is a matter of taste, just like any artform.

I love loads of TV Comedy, but there's some quality stuff on the 'net if you go searching.

Weeble and Bob are brilliant, and Joel Vietch's stuff is generally pure class too. Frightened Boy and Angry Kittens are great examples.

Actually I quite liked the star wars kid recuts :D *goes to youtube*

Well, as a comparison, check out TCN on boards. A lot there is just silly, but then again, there will be a moment of genuine humour every now and then.

    Yes it is shít.

In all my time online I've only encountered 2 clips that were so good you'd give them an 'A++' and reccomend them to your friends.

Unfortunately neither are fit for public consumption so I won't be linking them here.
