Upon looking into the world of Flash, i realise I know nothing.
Guide number? Is that just how far the flash can go?

Do I really need a 580 if I'm going to be shooting in small cramped venues?
But I suppose I will use it for other stuff eventually.

    Any help/ideas would be appreciated.

Jaysus, I'm always looking for help on this board :P

I just got a 580ex last week along with a Gary Fong Lightsphere II. I haven't had a chance to use it yet. I think I'll die of embarrassment with that contraption on my flash if I ever have to use it :o
Maybe a 430ex if you don't need oodles of power.

I'm not sure what flash you need but if you're in small cramped spaces then some sort of diffusion is a must. Check this rather camp individual for a class and vv cheap solution to diffusing light.

**edit** Bah I typed a huge reply to your guide number thing, but...well lets just say something happened. Yes Guide Number (GN) is a measure of flash power, the higher it is the more powerful the flash.
Handy way to calc aperture is GN/dist in metres....so for a person 5 metres away 58/5=11, so you use ƒ11. Of course you can do all sorts of mental power setting jiggery with the 580, it's like a mini computer it's got so many buttons, so of course you can drop the power and use ƒ2.8 or ƒ4 or whatever you want.
