    A lecturers notes are of the type " .ps " and I have no idea whats used to view these.Are there any free programs I can get for this?

    Heard of it once myself, these are Postscript files (I think they are related to PDF files), try Ghostview it should be able to view or print these files.

    Yeah, those are postscript files. Adobe acrobat might be able to read them. Well, let me rephrase that: the version you have to pay for will certainly read them (or at least convert them to PDFs). The free version probably will not.

    Ghostview, as Ruu suggested, should also work.

    Alternatively, you could get a serial port printer from somewhere (like a museum) and just dump the file to it.
