    Hi there,
Have a friend getting married next month and he wants to know if it's the done thing or not to give money to the registrar, like a priest is given money at a church wedding??

The registrar is one of the most senior local authority figures about (most are also county sheriffs and returning officers at elections, among other things). I suspect their salary is much better than that of a priest.

No you don't pay them extra (you pay a fee of €100 to get married in the first place)

Marrying people is part of their salaried job.

Priests rely on weddings, christenings, parish collections etc to fund them
