I'm looking for software, (good free ones if possible), that can image a cd/dvd. Is there a program that can show what sort of protection a cd/dvd uses?

    Any help is appreciated

You could try ISO Recorder, see if it fits your needs.

It failed to image the cd at 0%, spinned up the disc, then stopped

Edit: brain read that wrong thought you meant to build an image : )

    Try Alcohol 120

If you mean to "backup", I use RipIt4Me - you will also need DVDDecrypter, DVDShrink but these can be got once you download the RipIt4Me software.

CloneDVD also works very well, it can create perfect 1:1 copies of any CD.
