    Alright Sham,
This isn't the most popular item in Ireland so I'd say the likes of eBay is probably the cheapest place to pick up one of these.

    This place is good

I have bought some satellite stuff from them before. They seem to be the cheapest around. They take paypal too.

Just a word of warning before you purchase. The 500c is a cable receiver not a satellite receiver. Maybe you know that already. But since you posted on Satellite forum thought i might warn you. The 500s is a satellite receiver.

A guy I know offered to sell me a new Dreambox 500c for €400 - he'd come and install it and get it all up and running as part of the price.

I don't know much about this area so have no idea if that's a good price. I've seen one on the site linked above for €193 I think excluding VAT and delivery, so it does sound pricey. But this fella says that they are not allowed be shipped into Ireland and it could be stopped at customs - is that realistic?

Also, he said he'd pre-install the latest and greatest 3rd party firmware on it which would make it very flexible. Am not sure if there's genuine value in that or what benefits it would give me exactly so just wanna see what the more informed people out there reckon, as he may be a bit of a chancer.

just a word of warning... ntl (i persume you are on ntl) don't allow non ntl boxes on their network , and i think they could be some legal issues with them too....

As many others have posted, are you sure you want this cable receiver?

    Cable, cable ,cable................

Really don't see the point of this in Ireland given the pretty crappy cable quality offered here.
You cannot receive Sky Satellite using this,..you would need a DM500-S

No discussion whatsoever of hacking Sky or NTL/UPC.

You can legally use whatever receiver on Satellite, even for Sky1 if you use a legitimate Sky Subscription, though unless it is a dual tuner PVR, fairly pointless exercise compared with an official Sky Digibox. Not for technophobes either.

You can not legally use ANYTHING on cable other than the cable company supplied receiver.

FORGET 500c, it is illegal to use in Ireland. A DM500-S can be persuaded to work on Sky Satellite (poorly IMO compared with EPG/Autotuning of Sky Digibox).
