'ghost' hunting carlow stylee

had a great discussion with the owner a cafe in carlow (where the gaol was). He wants me to go up some night and set up some video and audio recorders to see if we can catch anything - lots of strange first hand stories from himself and his cafe manager and staff. for example, at the top of the building is a floor where the boiler is. the boiler is surrounded by a fireproofed wall and since no light can get to the windows, they have black sticky plastic on them (like in boy racer cars) yet the manageress - who was telling me this - was locking up one night and she saw the light on. didnt think about the fact that its impossible to actually see the light from outside due to the wall and blacked out windows, but decided she'd sort it in the morning. next morning, she went up (its an isolated area only acessible by a ladder), found the light on and the inner door wedged opened, which she found strange since only the owner ever goes up there. anyway, she switched off the light and shut the door and went back down. the owner came in to work (he was telling me this bit), heard the story, thought '**** thats a bit weird' but left it at that. a few hours later, he was still thinking about it so he climbed up the ladder, found the light on again and not only was the door open, but there was a nail hammered into the ground keeping the door open. the manageress and owner claimed that no-one had been up there after yer woman had switched off the light and closed the door.

they told me of dry goods that once arrived late at night (flour etc - ie food that didnt need refridgeration or anything) and they decided to leave it til the morning and locked up. when they arrived the next morning and unlocked the place the food was packed away. none of these stories are hearsay, as they witnessed this stuff themselves. They told me tons of things - no actual sight of apparitions or anything, but lots of movement of objects

anyway, told him I'd get some gear together and get back to him with a date ...

Yeah sounds great, I was in Carlow last month looking for relatives. Please keep us informed, I've only a little experience but loads of books on how to carry out an investigation if you need them, bearing in mind that you could be a pro for all i know.

Ah stoner don't play yourself down ... you have all you need for an investigation - most importantl an open mind (and the ability to say "thats boll0x").

Best of luck with that. It sounds fascinating. I'd love to see how it all turns out.

aye, it'll be interesting. Have to sort a date for it yet ... was hoping this weekend but on various levels that didnt pan out. The most interesting thing about this place is that we can go back a few times if need be.

Any more word on this happening? I for one would love to make the trip down.

aye, its happening early december but the downside is that due to it being a shopping complex, the security people wont let us in after its closed so we'll just have to set up the gear before they lock up, leave it running and then collect it in the morning again. Not what i was hoping for but at least we'll be able to see if we can catch anything on audio or video. two of the cameras will be on computer and one of the audio recorders has 8 hours on it so hopefully we'll be able to cover most of the night.

trying to source a few more. been hearing a rumour of a haunted maxol garage in carlow (i **** you not even though it sounds like a comedy) and ive been looking for more info on that ....

Any chance of a webcam for the night?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 59 ✭✭cormac_s

i will have a webcam wired up - I'll need to see if a) they've broadband in there (which im sure they do) and that b) the connection point is near enough. I'll bring an extra router and some ethernet cable actually just to be sure .... soo to cut a long story short - nice suggest mr 6th - a webcam we should/will have!

actually I must look at seeing if i can rig one of the nightvision digital cameras to act liek a webcam - them we'd be able to see in 0Lux

Cormac, myself and semperfi looked at this some time ago, once you have a TV card or better you should be fine

cool. I can take in digital video as it is - I need to have a look at software and see if theres anything that'll take in the video stream and let me broadcast it

what about those 4 channel CCTV cards, with 50 FPS , they come with remote web access , movement detection etc.

You can get them dirt cheap on e bay (watch for non compatable W XP stuff) but I know that CPC do one for 60 Stg ex vat an AEI one

you'd get them cheaper elsewhere, usually with these cameras the movement detection recording response is very slow though

it's clear that this one allows web access

ones on ebay were working out at about €40, but you'd need a w2000 pc (i think)

i saw a deadly DVR system with hard drive, four infrared outdoor cameras (which can be either cabled or wireless) and monitor for 2000 euro. aye, thats 2 grand but its the same system TAPS use and seems pretty versitile. If i had the money I'd get one of them.

seriously have you seen the e bay stuff, i was ment to put one together for home, with old work PCs etc is was going to cost me 300 euro, heres one with 4 X vision cameras

    http://cpc.farnell.com/jsp/endecaSearch/partDetail.jsp?SKU=SR06548

its available at £555.37 in high res. but that one is medium res @ £267.31

I would be great to set it up over the net and see the hot spots in the place, but you'd need BB at the shop too though!

I'll check it out and see. ive been wondering about how to set up some decent cctv stuff. bit nusy right now though (i work in IT and absolutely hate Microsoft software at this stage of the game)

by the time though you buy 4 cameras (at £309.59 each), you talking nearly as much as the DVR system - and the DVR includes a 200 gig harddrive
