A new €183 million private hospital will be officially opened in Dublin today.

The Beacon Clinic in Sandyford in south Dublin is the first such hospital to open in the capital for two decades.

The hospital says patients with VHI healthcare and Vivas private health insurance will be covered at the facility.

An Irish-American venture, it utilises the latest technology for scanning and treatment, including a fingerprinting system to ensure the correct drugs are dispensed to patients.

The hospital has 183 beds and services include heart surgery, neurosurgery and cancer care treatment.

It also plans to offer up to 50% of its available capacity for treating public patients and will perform work for the National Treatment Purchase Fund to cut public waiting lists.

An emergency department is due to open early next year to deal with adults and children with minor injuries, including fractures, but not major trauma cases.

The first patient will be admitted to the Beacon Hospital on 14 November.

First hospital opened in 2 decades...wow.

Me wonders can this ease the current problems with Irish Heathcare???

It might be the first new private hospital in 20 years, but Tallaght hospital is younger than The Square? < 15 years?

Yup, I think the Tallagh Hospital opened up in the late 1990's if I'm not mistaken.

And this Beacon thing is an odd one; was out that way for a conference a few weeks ago when I saw it; it's on the verge of the industrial estate and is part of the Beacon Village or something like that; basically there's a hotel, apartments and a hospital all part of one bix complex... with a shopping centre type thing going up right next to it... odd stuff.
