wanabe you're probably better off going into the shops and having a look at the starter sets, if anyone aproaches you tell them you're just looking but could they answer any questions for you while you're there. don't be pushed into anything.good luck

to be honest at that end of the scale they are all pretty similar but wilson and mcgregor have a good name behind them, when you go further up the ladder to the better more expensive clubs ask a pro for advice, there should be one in every decent golfshop, let them explain the differences to you, afraid i wouldn't know too much, sorry.

My start up set was "Colt"- which have been fine and when I decided to stick at the game I "invested" in a slightly more expensive set of Wilsons.

I passed on my old set to a friend and they are still working well for him...

I wouldn't worry too much about quality/brand names at this stage, just get a nice deal. I think mine was - set of clubs, bag, glove and shoes (and threw in a few free balls at the counter) for €200. While the clubs did get shabbier a lot quicker then my Wilsons - as a starter set they were perfect and did a fine job considering the abuse the took..... Thats another good point.... A lot of people damage clubs from poor swings to lack of proper care to not realising I should have just picked the ball off the path and not tried to hit it and thus ripping the head off the club.... You don't mind things like that happening to a starter set that was cheap.

    AND - MOST IMPORTANTLY

you can justify getting a "new" - "cooler" set of clubs if you stay at the game because -"I'm playing a good bit now - I need to invest in proper tools" and sure the starter set was great value a year ago - I can treat myself now as I was tight enough last year! Or was that just what I told myself last year;) :D .......

I bought a brand new set of Donnay's off Ebay for £40, think the postage was £15. And they are great for starting. A mate of mine bought a full set of Donnay's in Heatons for something like €120, they look really good also.

I know Golf Works in Deansgrange do a starter set of Roco (Irons, Woods, Bag And Trolley inc) for €129. Pretty sure they still do this. Its an excellant deal for starting off.

I always recommend beginners to buy a good make second-hand set of irons. Going to be better quality than the starter sets they sell in golf shops and going to be much easier to flog after you want to upgrade (or give up).
Woods aren't going to be too important to you at the start while you learn to hit your irons. If you have any friends/relatives who play they are bound to have an old Driver or 3 Wood they don't use to put in your bag.
Make sure the irons are cavity-backed (nearly all sets are) as these are easier to hit.
I play with Mizuno irons and I swear by them, but there are plenty of good brands.

Got a Ben Sayer set in Argos for €145 last Xmas. Pressie from the wife.
They're perfect but i'm already on the lookout for a new driver!
