Am I over-reacting or is this report from RTÉ News very anti_Islamic and paints them all out to be terrorists? I have rewritten the report below as a British News Source reporting on Catholic Terrorists to put it into perspective.

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2006/1023/alqaeda.html
    RTE Report wrote:
Islamists had Irish cells, US papers reveal

    23 October 2006 20:04

It has been revealed that declassified US State Department documents show up to six Islamist groups have had cells operating in Britain.

The documents, which date from 2003, show that al-Qaeda was one of a number of terrorist groups with active members here.

RTÉ News has established that much of the information is actually based on intelligence gathered by gardaí.

Now the report re-written by a British Newspaper referring to Catholics:
    Rewritten wrote:
Catholics had British cells, US papers reveal

    23 October 2006 20:04

It has been revealed that declassified US State Department documents show up to six Catholic groups have had cells operating in Ireland.

The documents, which date from 2003, show that IRA was one of a number of terrorist groups with active members here.

SKY News has established that much of the information is actually based on intelligence gathered by police.

I listened to the full report on Drivetime this evening, and I didn't hear any anti-islamist chat. It was pointing out the US Intelligence (sic) that those mentioned had links to Osama's gang and 2 Egyptian groups were operating in Ireland, wheather it be financial or pracitial support. It didn't paint a picture that every supporter of Islam was a terrorist.

they could have been a little more careful e.g.
US State Department documents show up to six Islamist Militant/Terrorist groups have had cells operating in Britain.
but i don't think they set out to be controversial

well it was more support groups rather then people carrying out terrorists actions here or about to elsewhere.

    are the docs anywhere?

There was a strong spin there, but nothing anti-islamic.

Sure wont there be the weekly "islamic corner" on the Lata Late show this friday. Probably with that I-spy bloke from the indo trying to be sensible with pat kenny being the opposite :p

I think that the majority of news reports on television are subtley anti-Islamic. They portray all forms of terrorism in the name of Islam as crimes of non-surrendering fundamentalists and I think that the Islamic sentiment against these acts is drowned out by that. Also, many Islamic ideologies and traditions are addressed as aggressive to those of the West. From most documentaries I've seen on Islam, I've only learned of the West's ignorant perspective on Islam, not anything about Islam.

Also, regarding the bourka, etc. (and I'm only saying etc. because I don't know the names of all the kinds of veils and will/have probably spelt them wrong) the fact that in most cultures it is a choice to wear it is not acknowledged. It is only in some repressive regimes in the middle-east that this occurs. It is more of a cultural type of dress, apparently, and it is only advised in the Qu'ran to wear it, not dictated.

OP I think that groups like Al Qu'eda define themselves as Islamic and call for Holy War on the West. Also Al Qu'eda do not align themselves to any one country! Al Qu'eda have said it is the duty of all Muslims to kill as many Westerners as they can, regardless of whether they are British, US, German, French, Irish or any other Western citizens.

The IRA aligned themselves to Ireland and always claimed they were fighting for a United Ireland and claimed that Britain was illegaly occupying the North. They never called for all Catholics across the world to strike dead all Protestants or British people they come across.

Therefore your re-write of the report is fundamentally flawed in many ways and cannot be taken seriously. RTE do not do anti-islamic material and indeed in the old days when we had a particular link with Palestine RTE were always supportive of Palestine and her people to the annoyance of Britain, the US and Israel.

Oh and btw, just as most Irish people did not feel that the IRA were acting on our behalf I'm sure most Muslims abhor the fact that Al Qu'eda claim to act on their behalf.

People seem to for get that the likes of Al Qu'eda are to Islam
what the KKK is to christianity.
