First time traveller.

    Hello,

    My fiance and me are travelling to Paris this weekend.

    It is his first time on an airplane and he has a fear of flying.

    Its been a few years since I was on a plane but I remember it hurt an awful lot when we were taking off, ears popping and such.

    Now having been plaugued with ear infections as a child it wasn't much of a big deal to me, perhaps this is even what caused it to happen to me!

    Basically I'm looking for tips to prevent anything like this happening him, to make the journey as stress free and painless as possible.

    Bring chewing gum or anything that you can chew really, that will most definitely help with the ear issue.

    Chewing will help, but I think it is swallowing that helps stop one's ears from popping. Sucking on a few sweets might be better.

    First thing: if there's the slightest trace of blocked sinuses/fluey symptoms, be prepared for your ears to hurt. In these cases, not even popping your ears by holding your nose and exhaling will equalise the pressure.

    Otherwise, just keep your ears equalised - best method is yawning but swallowing can help too.

    If your ears do start hurting, ask the crew for Karvol (or bring it yourself) - it goes on a tissue and you breathe it in, (also makes the entire cabin smell nice), and it can help relieve some of the pain.

    I find forcing myself to yawn on the way up, and a combination of yawning and swallowing air on the way down seem to help quite a bit.
