Chasing the rabbit

Is there any particular reason why you're not allowed to chase the rabbit in tournament games? I always assumed it was just my local's house rule, but watching HSP last night and (Gabe?) said that it was "strictly verboten" in tournaments but allowed in cash games such as that.

as long as I don't do it so vigourously I knock over anybody's chips, I should be allowed...

Rabbit hunting (term I was aware of) - having the dealer show what board cards would have come out after a hand has ended.

I think we've the opposite problem where I play, one of the dealers nearly always goes rabbit hunting of his own accord/

I hear it's fairly rampant in some casinos in the country.

If everyone folded pre-flop they will want to see the flop, turn, river. Then discussions of what everyone would have had ... yada, yada, yada ...

It will be a bit like playing poker with your relatives at Christmas. Draw poker, jacks to open, can a flush be diamonds and hearts?, do I have to bet?, who wants a cup of tea?, do you want mince pies or cake? :(

Its pointless. That and people saying, "I would of had a straight" are my two biggest hates in live poker. Especially when your dealing and playing at the same time.

It's all results-based thinking imo, if somebody's "chases the rabbit" and finds out they would have hit their straight or some such usually they might be more inclined in the future to call when on a draw which can only be good news for the other players, in the long run anyway...

And I'll have a mince pie, thanks.

If this were true then most of the time they would realise they would of missed their draw and be less likely to call next time

Yeah but they'll only remember the times they would have hit not all the times they missed.

No cos they'll think that since they 'missed; last time, thay are bound to hit this time making them more likely to call.

You aren't allowed rabbit hunt because it gives you more information about the hand. Say for instance there are 4 spades on the board at the turn and someone pushed repping As. You fold and ask to see the river - its not fair on the other player if the As comes out as it tells you he was bluffing.
Also, many players are pushed to make calls because they want to see if they hit. If they know they can see the river without paying then they may be less inclined to make calls.

As a tourny is really one big game so you can't go breaking a rule without getting everyone at all tables to agree.

In a cash game the rules are really just what the players at the table agree on - so if the table doesn't mind then . . . well the table doesn't mind.

aside from the information element doing a rabbit hunt is unnessecary and has the potential to slow the game down(esp if players make ahbit of doing it) n tournament play time is of the essence due to the fact that the blinds increase.

But if every table rabbit hunts it'll be even footing :p

The reason rabbit hunting should not be allowed is because you get to see cards your oponents did not have.

For example on a flop with 2 hearts where the Ace of hearts came on the river, you know your oponent didn't have the nut flush draw. It also wastes other players time and for a poker room time in cash games is money. I've never heard of it being allowed in tournaments and not in cash games or visa-versa . That's just stupid. Also if you set a precedent where it is alloud at all you have some idiot asking to rabbit hunt every second bloody hand.

IMO. Shouldn't be allowed if a player folds to a bet and then wants to see the river.. But if for example board is 10/J Hearts and you hold KhQh and someone folds to your bet I don't see any problem with it to see if the Royal comes .... Just my 2pworth.

I generally don't really care one way or the other. Sometimes I am curious to see the river, sometimes I don't care. I extremely rarely ask to see anyways.
