Swimming pool around Sandyford/Clonskeagh?

Planning on taking up swimming. I used to do this semi-seriously as a child but haven't in years. So I would be looking for somewhere near Sandyford/Clonskeagh (work in Sandyford) with lanes that I can just plow up and down for an hour either mornings/lunchtimes/evenings. I would primarily be looking for upper body fitness here (lower is well looked after by cycling.) I don't think I particularly need to lose or gain weight doing it and am not looking for that.

Given that I haven't swam seriously since a child, I might need some help with the technique so advice on that also appreciated.

EDIT: Also- anyone have any experience of prescription goggles, or should I just get contact lenses (the latter would also be useful for cycling.) My eyesight is dreadful but I _can_ probably manage with plain goggles if I am just going up and down a lane.

Prescription goggles might be a good idea --- that pool in glenalbyn is pretty long - 33m. You could lose your way.

A lot of goggles leak though so I wonder would you end up throwing half the prescription pairs away?

So, went for my first (pool) swim there in fifteen years this lunchtime and I think I am really going to like this. Nice pool all right. Managed I think 22 lengths and by god my arms are tired (I don't use them much!)

To be honest I think I will get away without the prescription goggles, I got speedo ones from Lifestyle across the road and while my vision above the water is useless underneath it isn't bad, I certainly wouldn't be bumping into people. I vaguely remember that lensing effect from when I was younger.

One thing I did notice was that I don't seem to float any more. If I lie completely still on my back my legs sink and pull me down. When doing lengths also I did find my legs much lower in the water than I remembered from when I was younger (e.g. not breaking the surface.) I guess this is mostly as it's not salt water? (Any swimming in the last fifteen years would have been in the sea.)

I do remember the basic strokes (crawl, breaststroke, backstroke - leaving the butterfly for now) but I am sure my technique leaves a lot to be desired, might investigate one of those adult instruction classes.

    Hi,

Can you pay per session in this pool? And if so how much is it?

    Thanks.

See http://www.dlrleisureservices.ie/index.php - new pool in Ballinteer (Meadowbrook) has opened since this thread was started.
