Getting spam that's not addressed to me...

Okay spam is one thing, we all have to put up with it to some extent....but the last few days I've started receiving mail with other addresses....whereas my address would be *******@blahblah.ie, now I'm getting other mail where the first letter of the ****** bit is the same and the @blahblah.ie is the same.

Anyone tell me why this might be? Or how I go about rectifying it?
Personal spam is one thing but belonging to three other addressees? F*ck that.

It's addressed to you allright. They've put your address in the BCC field. You won't be able to see these. You can't really get mail that isn't addressed to you either in the To, CC or BCC fields.

Well I'd already looked in the properties and message source fields...
Return-Path: <ddfccfdgbgfcd@carolbrychta.com>
Delivered-To: ***.**-wertz@******.**
Received: (vpopmail 5961 invoked by uid 16); 21 Oct 2006 18:44:39 +0100
Received: (qmail 5770 messnum 3620352 invoked from network[83.23.118.215/deo215.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl]); 21 Oct 2006 17:44:37 -0000
Received: from deo215.neoplus.adsl.tpnet.pl (HELO y8qfv2hul7630m1) (83.23.118.215)
by *******.****.***.**(qp 5770) with SMTP; 21 Oct 2006 17:44:37 -0000
From: "Randell Bergman" <ddfccfdgbgfcd@carolbrychta.com>
To: <westcorkmusic@***.**>

So the "To" field is NOT addressed to me...I'm only down in the message as having been the the one to get delivery.
As you can see I'm adjacent alphabetically to the intended recipient.

I'm getting loads of these in work addressed to someone whose name is very similar to mine that works in the same company...

They're all about football... Apparently it's that the spam filters grade each word and there are some words (about football and the likes) that will lower the messages "Spam Grade" and that's how it gets through...

Damn annoying to come into six or seven on a Monday morning after the weekend...

is it just me, or does there seem to have been a huge increase in spam in the last couple of weeks?

My gmail account is certainly seeing a large increase lately. I was getting one or two a day, now I'm getting about 300-400 a week in the Spam folder. Handy the way gmail filters out just about all of it, but it's certainly become worse.

we're seeing a big increase in spam in recent weeks ... it used to be 60% of inbound mail to my organisation was Spam ... now it's more like 80%

it's just so cheap to send millions of emails, there's no incentive for the Spam sources to stop sending them out ... :mad:

and my manager now wants me to write a report as to why there is such an increase in spam, pointing out causes, breaking the spam down by type and source and what can be done to stop it completely.

i'm still laughing

If the spammer is using BCC you won't see your email address in the headers.

Depending on your email setup you may be able to implement some form of solution or outsource to a 3rd party that specialises in this area

Report should read:
string spam;
double cost_of_sending_email;
double possible_monetary_returns ;

while ( cost_of_sending_email = 0.0 && possible_monetary_returns > 1.0)
{
spam++;
}

Well personally I've seen at least a tenfold increase to my 3 addresses, mainly constituting "Buy this stock now for huge returns", some american company offering high paying jobs (lol) and random sh*t made up of absolute gibberish text with a gif in the middle advertising bulk electronics from Asia....getting about 20-30 a day (I know, not a huge amount but big for me, since I avoid using the addresses for web stuff as much as I can)...

This spam not intended for me doesn't bother me as such; it's a small volume by comparison....I'm just interested as to why something addressed to westcorkmusic@ or westerntech@ manages to arrive at wertz@ ...have they some program bouncing crap back into the system and it's arriving in my inbox? Or am I potentially missing mails that are arriving in their inboxes?

Outsourcing to solve this is sledgehammer and nut TBH; I'm a personal home user, my mail volume is small and spam isn't the end of the world...if it was I'd already be using a decent blocker...

Ive never had to worry about spam really. Im lucky if i get one or two a month over all 5 of my email accounts. But then again i dont sign up to news leters or anything like that. I get the odd one or two nigerian bloke with 10 million$ he wants to give me, ect ect. But i just respond to that with the normal 9mb donkey p**n clip. Soon sorts that :)
