    Monsters under the bed syndrome.

I used to suffer from this alot, but I pretty much cured myself, the thing is that during the last two nights at the cash game I was given out to for being too aggressive on supposedly dangerous boards, i.e. I've now the opposite problem.

    Live 1/2

    Two examples:

    I've 77. I cover villain.

    Board.

    A79

Villain bets out 25. I flat call.

Turn is a blank. villain bets 25 I call.

River is an 8. Villain bets 30, I re-raise him all-in for 60/70 more and he calls.

The guy I was sitting beside basically gave out to me :o , there was a straight draw on the board, the guy could have had a higher set etc.

    2nd example.

    I've ajs.

    Flop:

    j810.

    I bet out 15.

Talking about the hand afterwards, the guy asked what the hell was I betting for? I was ****ed if someone had 79, his advice was to check the flop. Surely this is far far too cautious?

be glad your sitting beside clueless muppets and just take their money

Hmmm, I don't think I'm giving a great representation of this.

FTR, the guy who said this to me has been playing everything and everywhere for over fifty years, tonight he said he's never had a losing year. He plays a very tight conservative game. I'd argue he's too tight, but he makes a profit nearly all the time so that's his business. He's not a clueless muppet, far from it.

I dunno, he has a phenomenal ability to fold hands. He's basically saying to me not to bet hands if there's any danger on the board, I can't agree with this.? Really, I think what he's saying is bordering on ridiculous, and I was pretty amazed to hear this coming from him.

For instance, hand one is a standard push almost?

Bit more info on what happened preflop would be nice but you should tell your freind to stick to playing something safe like the knitting championships ........ they use child proof needles these days so tell him not to worry.

The board in the first hand is a dream for you if he has something like AK you should be making him go broke every time !!

    Opr

    lol.
He was telling me a story of when he was over at the wsop a few years ago, and how he played in the first games in the cue club. I dunno, maybe he's just gotten real conservative in his old age.

Yeah I was loving that board, the guy just didn't understand my reraise all-in on the river, he thought there was too much danger on the board to do that. Someone actually called out straight, as if that was the other thing that I could push with. I thought the other guy had a top pair that he hopefully couldn't lay down.

so he thought the guy bet the flop and the turn with an inside straight draw

    ridiculous, he obviously has ak,aq

Last night the guy in question held 10,8 on a q,10,8 board in a multi way pot and checked it down to the river. Surely this is -ev

    who is this guy?

think about how easy it is to play someone like this, just fold everything when he bets, dont value bet thin against him and bluff him constantly

    Yeah I know :)

He never makes c-bets without hitting the flop, so if I call bets when I'm in position against him I can just steal away.

Funny thing is that no one else has enough cop on to change how they play when they're against him.

Was he defo 100% serious, or could he be playing off his rock like image? ie to get you to fold to his rare bets on dangerous boards. Maybe not

As for the two hands, if he had the straight or an ver set then so be it and your broke.

The first hand is a dream hand. The 8 doesnt phase me as its an inside straight draw hit.

The second hand you dont say what happened (I presume all fold). It looks like a standard bet to me. You absolutely SHOULD NOT let this pass unbet. You dont give position etc, but I cant really imagine an unraised pot where I wouldnt raise this when it came to me...

Poker is a game of uncertainties based on probabillity over time. If you want certainty, play chess.

Nah he was 100% serious. If I was beaten in either hand I'm fairly sure I'd have picked up on it.

To be honest, I didn't even realise there was a straight draw on the river, the guy I was talking to couldnt believe I didn't see it, but I had the guy in the hand on tp and an 8 was a blank as far as I was concerned.

I was on the bb in the second hand. Only one caller, with q10o, a on the turn, and a k filled his straight on the river.

Perhaps I missed it, but where exactly was this game taking place?

    Casino? Pub?

Sorry if I missed it somewhere in the thread...

    Casino, why?

I'm suffering from the MUTB syndrome at the moment and feel I'm not getting the most value out of my strong hands.
One example from months ago that’s still bothering me is:

    Mid-Tourney. Nice Stacks both.
    I raise 3 x bb's from mp with 10 10.
All fold to bb who calls. No reads.

    Flop
    10 J 5 two hearts.

    BB bets 4 bb's. I call.

    Turn
    Rag.

BB bets 8 bbs. I call.

    River
    J hearts.
    BB bets half his stack.

    Call or raise?

(I know I could have raised earlier but was happy to take the chips and risk the flush).

I called. He shows the flush. I know I could have stacked him.

Last week in home game freeze-out similar situation. Mid set on flop. Called bets down to and on the river which made runner runner straight.

Called to two pair. Should have got value again but was fearing higher set, straight.

Ended up bulffing my night away after that.

    Any advice?

    Grow a set. :p

First flop is a dream, someone obviously has hit their flush and you've a house. Jam it!

There's only two hands beating you, and the likelyhood of the other guy havign them is very slim.

don't fear higher sets, don't just call with them.

Ever heard a poker player admit to having a losing year?

Its rare but I have. They are either extraordinaryaily honest people , or very good players as it happens. The latter will admit to losing months or so but generally dont have losing years but they are brutally honest with themselves and others.
