    Hi,

Im buying a new mobile phone - and am looking for one with reasonable quality sound recording. I intend to use it for recording samples from live music sessions.

    Any recommendations?

a mobile phone wouldn't really be any good for that. best get yourself some proper recording equipment

    Thanks for the reply.

I will probably be getting a minidisc/microphone in the near future but in the meantime Im looking for something simple and convenient.

The advantage of a phone is that its usually always with you. Are all phones' recording features the same or does any make/model stand out??

Some phones are better than others. I used to have an XDA2s which had decent recording on it. At the moment my phone doesn't have it so I ring my own mail box and leave any musical ideas I get while walking along until I get home where I might sing/play them again onto the recorder on my MP3 player which has a good dictaphone feature.

the microphones in phones are specifically designed to compress and transmit voice. they completely cut off everything above about 4KHz (cds cut off at 20kHz) and they use compression algorithms that are useless for music. a variation on the discrete fourier transform for those who are interested*.

honestly, phones are crap for this. if you want something cheap and cheerful to record music, get a dictaphone or something like that

I've done the old 'phone my mailbox' thing myself. :-)

Phones record in AMR format which is specifically designed for voice.
