    NEWSFLASH!

Well we had a big pow-wow about what the first song should be and we knew that sooner or later you guys and gals would have this debate as well. So we decided, what better way to open Phantom 105.2 then let you nominate the song that will be the first played on 105.2!

Not only, that if you make a nomination we'll put you in a draw to win tickets to the Phantom 105.2 Launch Party at the Village on October 31st and if you are one of the people who nominated the chosen song you could be getting a shiny new iPod as well!

So here's how to do it~

    http://www.phantom.ie/firstsong.htm

And don't forget to come back here to discuss your nomination and why!

Phantom 105.2 will go on-air at 12 midday on October 31st! Tell your friends.

What was the last song played when the old station went off the air? You should play that song.:D

Or even play the first song that was played on the old station.

It was by "McLusky" and was called "to hell with good intentions" from thier fantastic 2nd album "McLusky do Dallas" unfortunatly they have since split I highly recomend that album or else they have a singles collection called "Mcluskyism" also out which may be a good place to start

Andrew WK - It's Time To Party

The first time that they got a temporary license the first song they played (i.e. ttheir first legal transmission) was I Fought The Law by The Clash, which was very apt. To be honest, I have no idea what the first one should be this time.

Just so long as it isn't The Boys Are Back In Town by Thin Lizzy! (Now I bet loads of people will nominate it as I gave them the idea!)

I nominated Heyday by Mic Christopher. Seemed to tick all the boxes for me.

I nominated We Just Won't Be Defeated by the Go! Team, for two reasons:

    1. On account of Phantoms battle to get the license and the subsequent appeals.

    2. I saw the Go! Team last night. They were awesome.

Now, guess which was the main reason!

I'm going for the Guillemots, We're here

Maye the start of the new area shouldn't be harking back to the licence battle or the past in general.

Phantom won. They're going live in less than a week. They're not the plucky upstart rebels anymore, they're Dublin's alternative music station and looking back seems small when they should be thinking big.

And We're here is a big song.

I voted 'Are You Ready' by Thin Lizzy. It's how the greatest rock band this country ever produced used to start their gigs and get everybody in the mood. Straddles most of the ideals that Phantom are all about - Irish, rock and upbeat.
Forget the past, the good guys won, no need to gloat.

That said, I'd have no complaints about the suggestion above of 'Rock And Roll Radio' by The Ramones, if only for that spoken Intro: 'This Is Rock and Roll Radio!'.

    The Pixies - Cecilia Ann

That's just raw rock right there.

isn't that a bit mainstream for an alternative music station?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,726 ✭✭✭✭DMC

Well, the promo on the test transmission is playing "In the morning" by said band.

Isn't that part of Phantoms cause, to make alternative/indie/rock more accessible? To use a crap phrase, the "sound" of Razorlight, The Feeling etc fits in well with Phantom hooking more listeners in, "if you like that band, here's more music you might like", without alienating its core audience thats been around since pirate days.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,268 ✭✭✭Tomohawk

Joy divison - "Transmission" got my vote if only to hear this great song played on Irish radio. His voice is so unusual sounding that it will entice new younger listeners too young to know, too wild to care...

Plus it's rock, it's indie, its powerful music and it's apt for the situation!

    "Radio, Live Transmission..."

Just nominated "On Your Radio - Joe Jackson"

Eels - Mr. E's Beautiful Blues

    Or maybe

Shout Out Louds - The Comeback

EDIT: Damn, should've nominated "Into The Airwaves" by Jack's Mannequin

sorry the music snob in me was rearin its ugly head, tinged with a slight dislike for razorlight... i like to look for music i might like, and only occasionally do i hear of a good band by accident. but i guess the majority of the population doesn't have the luxury of time on their hands that i have, so they have to be told what to... sorry there goes the musical snob again... they need to have things recommended to them. i think the first song should be something that nobody's ever heard before, even the most hardcore phantomfm fans... which probably makes it a good thing that i'm not choosing the first song. i wonder though will they go straight into the first song or will there be an introduction? i have it!!! the first song to be played on phantom should be the new Phantom 105.2 jingle
