New Website Links Promote Reuse Of Waste Items In Clare, Limerick And Kerry

Members of the public in counties Clare, Limerick and Kerry are being urged to help reduce some of the thousands of tonnes of waste sent to landfills each year. Clare County Council’s website www.clarecoco.clare.ie, along with the Regional Waste Management Office website www.managewaste.ie, is now hosting links to several Reuse/Waste Swop Websites. The links encourage the reuse of everyday items ranging from tables and chairs to soft toys and fax machines. Clare County Council Limerick County Council, Kerry County Council, and Limerick City Council have all pledged their support to the website.

Commenting on the website Cllr. Patricia McCarthy, Chairperson of Clare County Council’s Environment, Emergency Services and Consumer Protection Strategic Policy Committees said, “The purpose of these website links is to educate and motivate people to think of material reuse as the first option in diverting unwanted materials from landfills. In 2004, for example, almost 42,000 tonnes of household waste was generated in Clare – enough to fill Cusack Parks ten times over. While 21% of this was recycled and some composted, most of it went to landfill. That's a huge amount considering we could reuse some of that. www.clarecoco.ie and www.managewaste.ie both offer members of the public the opportunity to do just that by offering links to other reuse websites, which make it easier to exchange or swap useful items.”

The reuse websites include a college and school book exchange portal for parents wishing to reduce the costs associated with sending their children back to education. www.managewaste.ie also provides links to a number of non-profit ‘Freecycle Networks’, which promote the exchange of reusable goods among members of the public.

According to Cllr. McCarthy, “Reuse is the second step in the waste reduction hierarchy of ‘reduce, reuse, recycle’ and plays an important role in programs to divert waste from our landfills. We hope that people will now participate in exchanging goods with people from within the county and from neighbouring counties in a bid to reduce the amount of material going to landfill each year. The promotion of reuse is a central policy in the Clare/Limerick/Kerry Waste Management Plan. “

Managers for Limerick, Clare and Kerry County Councils and Limerick City Council signed the new Waste Management Plan for 2006-2011 in June. Signing of the plan marked the culmination of an extensive strategy review procedure during which all sectors of business and community were encouraged to make submissions towards the preparation and refinement of the draft plan. The Plan for 2006-2011 continues on from the 2001-2005 Plan to apply proactive, practical measures towards achieving regional waste management policy and targets that in turn reflect national policy.

The Clare/Limerick/Kerry Waste Management Plan 2006-2011 can be viewed on www.clarecoco.ie or www.managewaste.ie. Hard copies are available from the Environment section of Clare County Council. A paper copy of the Plan costs €50 and it is also available on CD-Rom at a cost of €5.
