First time buyers wishing to purchase a property at an affordable price are being handed a lifeline by Clare County Council, in partnership with a number of local property developers. 29 houses in the Kilrush, Ennis and Shannon areas are being made available at a reduced price rather than market value, in accordance with Part V of the Planning and Development Acts 2000-2004.

The townhouses, apartments, and semi-detached and mid-terrace houses form part of the Affordable Housing Scheme, which enables persons to buy newly constructed homes in areas where property prices have created an affordability gap for first time buyers. The property prices range from EUR109,000 for a 2 bed-apartment in Smithstown, Shannon to EUR176,000 for a three bed townhouse at ‘Acha Bhile’, Loughville, Ennis. Applicants will be assessed against a points-based criteria which includes the current housing circumstances/needs of eligible persons, ability to meet financial commitments, and the distance of affordable housing from places of employment of eligible persons.

According to Cllr. Joe Arkins (FG), Cathaoirleach of the Housing and Social Policy Special Policy Committee, “There are many people who are seeking to own a home but are restricted from doing so because of spiraling house prices. By offering more people the chance to own their home, we will widen opportunity and narrow the wealth gap between those with housing assets and those without.”

    Available dwellings:
Loughville, Ennis - 13 no. three bed townhouses
Shanaway Rd, Ennis - 6 no. two bed apartments, 2 no. three bed apartments, 2 no. three bed mid-terrace houses
Roslevan, Ennis - 1 no. four bed semi-detached house
Shannon - 1 no. two bed apartment
Kilrush - 4 no. three bed semi-detached houses

Application forms for interested persons are available from the Affordable Housing Section, Clare County Council, Francis St., Ennis, County Clare or by calling 065-6846400. The closing date for receipt of application forms is 4pm, Friday, November 10th, 2006.
