quick question im hoping someone here can answer

in our whole office we're in a union and they are rubbish and EVERYONE wants to change union

however, the company say they will not deal with any other union (because the current union are part of a cosy little clique they got going on)

what governing body can we complain to / what action can we take?

    thanks in advance guys

The members ARE the union. You may think that the elected representatives are rubbish but did you attend the AGM? In my experience, the members that complain most about their union are the ones which are least likely to attend the AGM. At the AGM each member has an opportunity to exercise their rights by nominating members for the committee positions for the following year.

They are perfectly entitled to hold this view. Most companies who recognise a particular union/unions will refuse to recognise further unions. This is perfectly understandable as employees could chop and change constantly which would not be conducive to good union/management co-operation. In my main workplace, there are 4 unions but only 2 have negotiating rights.

Remember - a employer does not have to recognise ANY trade union.

You could complain to the headquarters of your union or you could attend the annual AGM and nominate members to the officer board of your choice and hope to get your proposals seconded and then hope that others vote in your favour should their be any counter proposals.

Get your colleagues to attent the next AGM. When nominations are taken for the officer board propose someone of you choice and get you colleagues to back your proposal. You may lose if/when a vote is taken but that's democracy!

    Hi miju.

On rereading my post from last night, it sounds a bit aggressive now. Apologies.

It's probably because of my experience at work. I am in one of the elected positions because we find it very difficult to get anyone else to go forward. (500 members in branch - average attendance at AGM= 25). Some members complain that it is the same 'faces' year after year but they fail to attend meetings and exercise their rights.

    Some useful info here:
