did it ever occur that they may be only the japanese names ?? just a thought. They have all sort of names over there for the cars that are different from the european models , like yaris = vitz etc

Ugly cheapo looking car btw ... the new civic saloon is much nicer.

I prefered the older model , horrible looking piece of kit , even the koreans are making nicer cars now . its a pity because toyota are way up there on mechanics and reliability . if only we werent in such an image obsessed world.

I would not pay much attention to the overkill of chrome, etc the Jap home market always had varied weird styling.

The saloon and estate will still be called Corolla in Europe as the cars are built in Turkey. The 3 and 5 door hatchback will be called Auris and is built in the UK. None of these are much different from the outgoing models they are replacing. A missed opportunity imo.

Toyota have sold around 31 million Corollas since it first appeared in the late 1960s. I don't think they are overly concerend about the "image above everything else" buyer. Toyota have done very well over the years, they have tapped into a market where they give alot of people exactly what they want.

    Yep.

Different strokes for different folks and all that.

I think though toyota are going too far down that route. There was a time around 2003 when it looked like Toyota were going to build some really desirable cars, the Corolla was up there, the Avensis was probably the best around, not the mention the Mr2, or the Celica. Now they seem to be concentrating on being very very inoffensive, and are killing off everything that isn't mainstream.

I agree to a point but the advantage the Corolla saloon will have over the Civic saloon (in this country anyway) is that the Corolla will have a 1.4 litre engine and the option of a diesel, it will probably cost about €2k - €3k cheaper and will have a slighter more varied trim line up. This will appeal in countries like Ireland where the motorist is punished by the size engine they drive. The Civic saloon also only comes in one trim level (granted it literally has every extra as standard) and only one engine - a 1.8 litre petrol. The only optional extra being an auto box. The Civic saloon is really only aimed at the US market where it usually sells well. While a nice car it is, for €26.5k with a 1.8 litre engine there are alot of other options out there for similar money.

True. Volume seems to be the name of the game these days.

Saying that they seem to be giving Lexus a free hand to do their own thing these days. The days when Lexus were just rebadged Toyotas seem a distant memory.

arnt the honda dealers not putting the civic up by 1000 euro in jan . greedy bastards supply and demand my arse ( cant get one cause kph mph pool , they have increase production by 90000 units in the uk. There just not bringing them in , some dealers are only ordering 4-5 for jan.

Anyway you cant make a compairson between a civic saloon and corrolla saloon , honda have moved every model up .

the civic now really is a competitor for the avensis.

i agree toyota were on the right track then got out of everything , wheres the new mr2 , celica , supra , camry , land cruiser ?s

The Civic is still a smaller car in dimensions than the Avensis class. The 1.4 Civic competes with the 1.4 Corolla, 1.4 Focus and 1.4 Golf, etc. They only offer the Civic saloon in 1.8 litre and there are very few of them about. I would too think they would be hard to sell on used in this country. If they really wanted to market the Civic saloon as an alternative to the Avensis, etc they should have given it a different name.

The Camry is no longer sold in Europe because it was always a slow seller here. The Lexus IS has established itself in Europe so Toyota don't need to offer anything in this size here anymore.

The Celica and MR2 demise is mind boggling alright since they had cult followings.

There is an all new Landcruiser sometime in late 2008 or 2009. The Landcruiser is a very good seller for Toyota.

A new Supra type performance car is also under development using their F1 technology. It is expected in the next 2 years.
