Is there a rule of thumb for adding borders to your pics?

I have been adding black borders with a white keyline to all my pics irrespective of there content. Below are 2 examples. Do you think these are the best borders for each pic?

I use the same style borders, I think it's something personal.. some people don't like borders at all. I think they fit fine :)

I tried some black borders on Motorcycling pictures and one of the guys said not to do it as it makes them look like a memorial picture :) Frames look nice DarrenG, black suit the landscape.

Id use the same style and the only deviation would be to reverse the colours (black and then white). The borders look good and suit the photo's.

I really like black frames. Pity my lecturer doesn't.

Photoshop --> Image --> Canvas Size...

Just set background to white and if your image is for example 1200 x 800 pixels change canvas size to 1204 x 804 pixels... then set background to black and change canvas again to 1280 x 854 pixels.

And that's all... you can choose other dimensions and colors of course, whatever you like

Or in photoshop add a layer style by clicking the little f in the black circle at the bottom of the layer palet, go to stroke, set its position to inside, fill type to gradient and style shape burst. Edit the gradient to your liking.

This is handy because you have lots of control over the gradient. It does crop your shot a bit but as Dimy pointed out you can just increase the canvas size and/or apply the stroke to a filled layer beneath your image.

I guess the rule of thumb is not to make border nicer than a picture :-)

"paspartu" has the single point - make an image stand out of the background is hanging at, and add borders. If an image has borders itself - it wont need a border.

Your borders are in the same style as the pics, so they work well together. If you change the style, you may find that you need different borders :)

My only gripe with those borders is that I think the white area is too thin. It looks like some antialiasing gone wrong to me.

Yep. Typically, just a single colour does me grand.

    Remember though:

Black excludes all outside the frame, white includes everything outside the frame :)

Using the canvas figure by Dimy, I assume the white can be increased by changing the 1st canvas details slightly - havent tried this effect yet so I am asking a question here I suppose!!
