Trance Mediumship & Channeling

Ok so this is something I am becoming very interested in so I looked for an article explaining what it is, because if I tried to put it down at the moment it would come out incomprehensible.
Trance Mediumship & Channeling - What is it?

Making contact with those in the spirit world can be achieved by many methods but none are so intense, so utterly absorbing and emotionally fulfilling as trance, channeling, overshadowing or inspired talking. It is perhaps the closest form of communication between spirit guides and the medium and is usually confined to working circles. A circle by the way is the modern day word for séance, and I am sure you will agree sounds more acceptable. When mediums train they will often sit in a development circle, here they learn to make contact with the spirit world and may find they have the capacity for trance work. They may also be able to listen to the wise and informative words of a spirit guide spoken through a trance medium.

Spirit people, when communicating can be of varying distances from the medium, indeed most mediums can usually describe whether a communicator is to the left, right or behind them. But spirit guides who have a strong connection with their medium are able to come closer, some describe this as walking into our aura. If we remember the human aura extends some 4 feet around us, then when a guide enters this area there is a bonding and deepening of contact.

But there are also different levels of this type of communication, in one state the medium remains fully conscious and is aware of all that takes place, in the other the medium is apparently asleep and has little or no recollection of the events taking place.

    Overshadowing

So let's explore the first of these, overshadowing. In this particular form of communication the spirit guide or communicator has become very close to the medium. It should be noted all this happens with the complete agreement of the medium, in fact it would be impossible otherwise. It is this closeness that allows the spirit guide to influence the medium, he or she will then be able to speak for the communicating guide. The voice will be hers but the words will be of the guide, and the medium will be able to let the guide address those in the circle. Usually this will be an informative talk on spiritual matters, and on some occasions those in the circle will be able to ask questions of the guide.

    Full Trance / Channeling

This is perhaps the more well known form of spirit trance communication and is when the full co-operation of the medium is utilised. In this form the medium will spend a few moments attuning to their guide, before seemingly falling off to sleep. After a brief period the medium will have become an instrument for the guide, the guide being able to use his/ her voice directly. In explanation our medium has simply withdrawn to allow the spirit communicator through and will be unaware of the words actually spoken by him. Often tape recordings of these meetings are made to enable the medium to benefit from what was said.

On these occasions the guide will impart great knowledge and teachings, for he is in direct contact with those about him. Questions are often asked and indeed the communicating guide will often invite them. There is some confusion on whether any voice accent should be apparent, to this I would say yes, it adds authenticity if the details of the guide were previously known, then it might be logical for them to represent themselves accent, mannerisms and all.

Public demonstrations of trance mediumship have been given, to mixed reactions. To hear an individual suddenly start talking in a foreign accent and speaking of things we can often not confirm, can to some people be a little hard to swallow. But if we listen, just for a moment and dispense with our logic, so that we can hear the words, we may find great enlightenment. For the words spoken by a guide are eloquent, knowledgeable and reasonable to our intelligence. A truly tranced medium will not be stuck for answers to questions, though we may not always hear what we expect.

    Inspired Speaking

Similar to overshadowing, the guide is directing the medium in what to say. Mediums who give clairvoyant readings in spiritualist churches may precede with a talk, this could be of their own construction or be inspired by their guide. The guide promoting or giving information and insight into what to speak of.

Now the above isn't 100% sitting with what I believe but its a good basis for a discussion on here I think?

    Interesting topic.........

I have lots of views on trance mediumship.......

I do believe that a lot of people use inspired speech on a regular basis without conscious knowledge.
Have you ever been with someone desperately in need of comfort or advice and suddenly you start talking with words you didn't seem to put together in your own mind first?
Also, in group/circle work I think this happens a lot......where one member will be discussing a subject and come out with a valid response explaining things that are beyond his / her experience and knowledge.

Full trance mediumship is something I am very interested in and have noticed spirits coming a lot closer to my physically of late and the feeling is that this may progress to channelling directly/trancing for the spirit......but I am looking for a group who develop this as I don't want to do this on my own just yet.
The woman I was lead in developing from went into a trance state on occasion and it was absolutely astonishing.....you can often see a transfiguration in the face/aura of the person when they are in this state of awareness and allowing another energy to come through.....
I think that is the way I know when it is REALLY taking place as even I find myself doubting first and then believing second....

    Good topic....

It also gives a lot of weight to one of my most important rules of spirit communication and that is respect.......for the channeller and the spirit coming through. Always, this needs to be done on a full acceptance and willingness of the trancer (funny word) and can ONLY be achieved if that openness and respect is in place.

When you see complete novices (although perhaps very psychically gifted) being 'taken over' by a spirit it usually means one of two things........it's a fake, where the channeller is over-eager or else a charlatan. The other possibility is that the spirit has little to no respect for the channeller and that is a situation to be avoided strongly.

This of course is my view and strongly correlates to the above article.

    Hi all,

I am new to these boards, dont know why I have not discovered them before now. I work with spirit and psychic etc etc and I find trance fascinating, I do not do trance work myself as I have no development circle. I travel to UK couple of times a year to get training and proper factual information, my tutors are SNU affiliated and also teach in Arthur Findlay College so I feel I am in safe hands. Many people do not seem to fully understand trance work or what exactly it is. As a psychic or medium we go into an altered state of conciousness which is not trance. Trance usually begins with overshadowing where we feel the spirit really come close and we speak their words, it may be thought of as inspired words or thought patterns etc. True trance takes many years to develop and requires a circle of trusted people who will give their energy to the trance developing medium. It is wonderful to see and the power and the energy that comes with it is astounding.
Just thought I would throw in my pennies worth, all knowledge of anything is open to challenge I would suppose lol but really, we mediums/psychics do have to stand up and be counted as a group rather than being witch hunted
Regards and looking forward to being part of this community :)

Welcome aboard Suebh, there is a circle in Dublin (we're meeting tonight) but we're quite a step away from looking at trance etc.

Have a nosey through the threads and dig up anything you like no matter how old.

Am getting used to making my way round the boards, there is lots to see lol. I actually teach online at another site on a Wednesday, psychic class and circle. I would love to get involved with a 'proper' development group in Dublin. Also I am looking at teaching face-to-face in my local area as I find people are very interested but base alot of their knowledge on 'Most Huanted' type rubbish  Not their fault as it seems that psychic and spirit is thought to be only for the very special or very gifted. I would argue that and try to prove and show why I disagree. Looking forward to the discussions on the boards
