In Europe, the hour changes on the last Sundays in March and October. We call it Summer Time, the yanks call it "Daylight Savings Time" (also, it begins a week later in the US).

The clock goes back on the 29th, so we "gain" an extra hour in bed. The mornings will be brighter as the brightness that was was 8:00am on Sat 28th is now at 7:00am on Sunday 29th.

But, the evenings are darker too, as the light level at 6:00pm on Sat 28th now is at 5:00pm on the Sunday.

i think u might be right there, but it will defo get darker in a couple of weeks in the maidin - going to work in the dark, coming home in the dark - i guess this means that i'll start getting blinded by peoples headlights again...
not to mention the flipping cold in the morning when you're trying to defrost the car...

Daylight Savings Time does begin a week later here, but we change our clocks back on October 29th at 2am as well.

I spoke to an American woman during the summer, if I recall correctly she was from Texas [or Tennassee(sp?), it was definitely a 'T' state...], and she told me they don't even bother with DST...

it is the adjustment thing that makes the clock change hard. and yet, after you're used to it you are called to switch back to normal.

From ww2 to the early 70's we used to be an extra hour off gmt. So while now we are on gmt+1 and next week we will be on gmt. 40 years ago the winter was gmt+1 and summer was gmt+2. So official summertime was what we had in winter and in summer there was an extra hour of light in the evenings.

I wish we could go back to that. An extra hour of light each evening would be nice. Especially when I am walking my dogs after work and we have to race to the park so they can get 20 minutes off lead time where I'm not worried about a mad man jumping out of the bushes. Not even going to manage that next week.:(

Or for those of use who work nights - an extra hour of work for no pay!

They clocks do not actually go 'back' in the winter. They just resume to normal time. Summer time is artificial. Winter time is the 'real' time.

haha that thing is harder to remember than just knowing when to put it forward or back

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,808 ✭✭✭Dooom

I've always wondered what it'd be like if I didn't set the clock forward/back. I'd be an hour late/early for everything, and it'd probably completely screw my whole body up. Could be funny though.

Damnit. The "spring forward, fall back" thing used to make perfect sense to me. Now, thanks to this thread, the next time I think of it I probably won't remember which way it is.

am i just completely mad or did the clocks adjust an extra hour back or forward around 1990? like it went back twice or forward twice, bearing in mind i was only 7 + im from the west of ireland it might explain why im confused!?!?

  • Moderators, Entertainment Moderators Posts: 10,446 Mod ✭✭✭✭xzanti

Does anyone actually know why we observe this ritual of daylight savings time??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,289 ✭✭✭gucci

is it not something to do with kids walking to school etc and meaning there should be less accidents because they will be walking in the daylight??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,414 ✭✭✭Archeron

And for farmers to have an extra hour in the morning for collecting the coconut harvest.

It will be brighter in the mornings for the first while after the change. It will of course continue to get less bright though...it being winter and all.
