Recruitment agency question

    Hi All,
I'm after finishing a Masters and have been looking for a job(in the area of IT), I applied for a particular role through a recruitment agency, after two rounds I was told I had the job, I was also told by the interviewers that they wanted to move quickly on finalising the job. I was told I had the job last Monday (a week and a half ago), I had told the recruitment agency that I would accept any offer the company made as I am really looking to get in the door, and would be happy in that particular role.
But today, the recruitment agency have told me that there is a problem with the company getting clearance to sign off on giving me the offer/contract in writing. A friend has suggested that the agency may be looking for more money for themselves.

Do ye think this could be the case? Should I contact the company directly?

    Any suggestions are appreciated.

Maybe funding for a particular project you
were ear marked for fell through or was delayed!

I've had a similar one before - "there's some problems issuing the contracts" - and pretty much everyone I talked to (including some recruitment agents) reckoned that the agency was attempting to get more money for themselves.

I don't think this is the right way to go.
The agency will have negotiated the fee % before the deal so they wouldn't be trying to renegotiate at this stage. The hiring company would have agreed terms too and it would be a bad sign if they were trying to change terms now.
I think it is more likely, especially if it is a large IT company that there are forms to be filled, approved, approved again, t's to be crossed and i's to be dotted. These can take longer with a large organisation than you would expect.
Or as Mel said funding has to be gotten from elsewhere, again time-consuming.

Ask the recruitment company exactly what the problem is. Hope it works out and all the best with it.

I agree with NOT going behind the agencies back to the company, its seen as unproffesional, however tempting it is.....

I think you should just wait.

I've previously gotten a job where there was a two week delay as the person who had to sign off on the contract was away. Unlike you I wasn't told I had the job but this was a direct hire with no agency involved so it was somewhat less complicated.

I believe that if you are not happy with the situation and you have conatct details for someone within the company you should contact them directly. Some and I say some of these recruitment guys are complete gangsters and if you have your heart set on this job contact them. Just say you were not to sure whats going on, it will do no harm. This is your future.....

its also possible that one of your references didnt check out.
Happened to a mate of mine who was inventive with his cv

    Thanks for all the replies.
My references check out ok, plus they wouldn't have told me the job was mine if they hadn't.
The thing is I have turned down other interviews since on the basis that I had this job.
I think I'll give the recruitment agency until Monday and start looking for another job in the mean time.

then ring the company thanking them for the latest interview (only if you remember the names, tho).
