    IRCSET ARE CUNTBAGS!
    Dear Senior Sophister Physics students,

I would also like to give you advance notice that the IRCSET (Irish
Research Council for Science Engineering and Technology) will be issuing
their call for Postgraduate Scholarship applications some 3 months
    earlier than usual.

The call is likely to be issued in early December with a deadline for
    application in February.

You may thus be forced to consider your future direction with regard to
postgraduate research in physics within Ireland at a much earlier point
than SS students in previous years
    .

    Giving you some advance notice.
    THIS SUCKS COMPLETE DONKEY BALLS!

I really really really don't want to have to decide until I'm done with the whole finals thing, got my grade etc. Also talked to a few postgrads in various groups to makesure its not a bollox group.

How does this work anyway? A researcher will accept you provisionally for a position, but then what happens if you get a III in your degree? Or what if you were expecting a much lower grade than you get and but you've already applied for a position even though you could have got the one you really want!! CUNTARDS STRESS BASTRADOS

    Insert rant here...

IRCSET's first round has always been before you know your degree results, or even sit your exams. Its just earlier this year. There is a second round for ircset in late summer(the one i was in) , which normally has a closing date in august. Though if you can get your **** together sure go for either. Basically your supervisor would more or less agree to supervise you, then you get IRCSET , then you apply to the college to be a postgrad. Or well thats what i/people i know did anyway.....

Wow. That sucks. Nice of the engineering school to let us know, of course.

We, a select few that is, where told early last week about it in a lecture from the careers people. I can forward the powerpoint slides to yea, no mention of exact deadline though.

Ian, as someone who has successfully applied, what did yea put in the application.

It's not too bad. The 'other' research council (IRCHSS, for humanities and social sciences) only does one call, and it closes in December. A lot of people apply (like me) with vague ideas and with no obligation to actually accept it. It's a bit of a pain filling out all the forms. (It's more of a pain when they don't fund you :( )

I know I allready replied to this, but I think it merits more discussion since departments still ahven't been told that january may be the deadline. A friend of mine asked her supervisor only to be told march, this could turn into a big problem.

    Agreed, split from bitch/rant/moan thread.

Okay I may have over-reacted slightly in my initial post. Was a little stressed over it. But it's still very bad. I fear a mess of rash decisions will come of this leaving a lot of confusion and dissappointment in its wake.

/me goes to look around research groups in own dept
