Ive just connected my media centre pc to my sony 40" through a dvi to hdmi connector. I cant seem to get a higher resolution than 1280*1024. The resolution on the tv is 1366*768. Things dont look great at the moment, text looks dodgy and when i maximize a window i cant see the toolbars at the top or botton. Any help would be appreciated. I have a Nvidia GeForce 6800 graphics card.

    Download rivatuner
and create a custom resolution for your screen.

Possibly outdated drivers as well ? have you tried updating your display drivers.

If that changes nothing then forcing a custom resolution should do the trick.

How is it connected via component, VGA, DVI or HDMI ?

isn't there a seperate section in the nvidia control panel for tv resolutions? you tell it you have a hdtv and what standard signal, i.e 720p, 1080i you wnt sent to it, and it sets it up? you set other resolutions in a different section. I'll try and take some screen shots tongiht

actually the more i think of it what i am thinking of may only allhow 720p. as in 720, and not allow 768. rivatuner or powerstrip may be the answer to your problem, but i'll still check tonight

Its a sony 40" v series ... the new driver will let me enter in any resolution, but 1280 x 720 seems to look the best... Im able to use 1360 x 760, looks even worse. Ive been using windows media centre to play videos and dvd's and it works fine... guess ill just have to use that.

    thanks for the help

I'm no expert on this, but if you want pixel mapping between your pc and your hdtv you are going to need to use the VGA connection.

Anything output from DVI to the HDMI connection comes through as HD, so you've got limited choices and over/underscaling depending on the resolution you choose. Try both 720p and 1080i to see what looks best to you, but all the time bearing in mind that this is better when running Media Centre, rather than desktop applications.

Media Centre has to be configured to use the display too, so you need to go through the Wizards and tell it that you have a digital tv and are using hdmi to connect it, this fixes the refresh rate to 60 hertz (I think).

AVforums.co.uk and thegreenbutton.com might be useful resources to add into your favourites if you are having difficulties.

Try powerstrip as well for forcing the 1366x768 custom resolution, text can look a little off when running not at the native resolution but I've never seen it be majorly distracting under MCE (using the OS anything else is another story however).

Check the aspect ratio for the HDMI input and make sure just in case it's selectable that it is not set to 4:3.

Having taken a peek at the manual for the KDL-40 V2000 there should be a VGA port of the back of the TV which is worth trying out as well.
